Alicia was in shock about what had just transpired in the humble Portland living room. She hastily picked up her clothes and put them on in a split second. She could hear Max and his mom quarreling in the kitchen. He had lied to her that his mom not loathing her. He had lied about the acceptance and affection promised. He had lied about their wedding and life ahead.

She slammed the door and walked out into the summer evening shutting out her life forever. Her brain cudnt function as rationally as it always did. Her heart didn't beat like it always did. Tears rolled down her flushed cheeks just like the childhood days when she had to go to bed hungry. She took a shuttle to the airport and spent the night on a bench, hungry and broken. Early next morning she boarded the first flight to NewYork.

Looking down from the aircraft window at Portland for one last time, Alicia Marner decided on getting drunk. Drunk on her only aphrodisiac after Max, power.

Touching down in NewYork, Alicia's PA, Andrea was waiting with a placard at the gates. "Ma'am, u weren't about to return for the weekend?? Why the sudden change in plans? Are you fine ma'am? You look flushed!", Andrea was Alicia's only confidante after Max and such a hasty flight had got her worried. " Everything is fine darling. I just remembered some important work that needs immediate attention", Alicia's shallow reply was enough for Andrea to know something was wrong but she decided against questioning. They drove into Alicia's building and all the way she had been silent, which was rare. She always had so much to share with Andrea, her younger sister. They had been at the orphanage together and were sisters. But Andrea had got adopted early and remembered nothing of it. Alicia had pledged to protect her no matter what and eventhough she hated her lost parents but Andrea was her life.
She felt a pang of guilt to have been acting so weird. Alicia left for her office after a quick shower and hearty meal. It was sunday and the office was like a haunted fortress at this hour of the day. She punched in her code outside her cabin and noticed that her workaholic CEO was in his cabin. Alicia had resented workaholics for a long time, but now they seemed like her alteregoes. Alicia worked all night and had dinner from the service fridge. She knew this was her life now and she was content. Or so she pretended to be.
