...i sat in my dark apartment, trying to finish a paper i had to turn in, the loud clicking sounds of my keyboard rang throughout my empty apartment. the soft sound of my music being played, it was peaceful. the sudden sound of my phone ringing caught me off guard. i look at the time: 2:47am. i then looked at the caller id, hoping that it wasn't you who was calling, but of course, it had to be you. i knew i shouldn't pick up, you were probably drunk anyways, but i never was exactly a fast learner. i slowly reached out to pick up my phone and accepted the call, i placed my phone up to my ear. "hello?" i said, almost in a whisper. a minute passed, but a reply could not be heard. i was about to hang up til i heard you calling my name. my voice was caught in my throat upon hearing your voice, especially calling my name.
i wanted to say that i missed you but i know i couldn't, shouldn't. "yes?" i replied. then to no response once again. i let out a sigh knowing you were most likely drunk yet again. every time you called i had always hoped that it would be different. i was a fool to think you would ever call me on purpose, you tended to only call when you needed me. i could hear your breathing against the speaker and some laughter and talking in the background. i lean back against my chair and looked up at the ceiling, waiting for you to reply."can you..." you started, but then stopped in the middle of your question. i let out a hum as an indication that i was still listening. "can you meet me at the bridge?" i was caught back by the question, out of everything you could've asked, i wasn't expecting that. the bridge was where we first met, in a sense i know wish we hadn't had met all those years ago.
it was almost 3am yet i said yes. i had said yes to you once again. it seems like no matter how hard i try, i could never say no to you. i hung up and grabbed a jacket and began walking towards the park. it wasn't too far from my apartment but i still felt scared walking around so late. as i walked closer and closer to the bridge i could make out a figure standing in the middle of the bridge and looking at the stream below it.
the bridge was small and made out of wood. it was built above a small stream so children could get to the over side of the field. i made my way onto the bridge and stood next to you. "hey-" before i could finish my sentence, you pulled me into a tight hug. i would never admit it but i missed your hugs. they always made me feel so safe and they were always so comfortable. i brought my arms up and hugged you back and we just stayed like that. it felt so calm and comforting even though i knew i should have pushed you away.
after a little while i let go and took a few steps back. "why did you want to meet here?" i asked in a soft tone. you smile at me, but it wasn't one of your usual ones, this one was kind of sad? "i missed you." and i froze.
you missed me. it was hard to digest what you had just said. all i ever wanted was for you to say that you missed me. but now that you actually said it, i don't know what to say or do. i looked down at my shoes but due to the dark i could barely see them. a large gust of wind brushes by and sends a chill down my neck. after a while i was able to look up at you again and you still had the same smile on your face. "you miss me?" i ask as if i didn't believe what you said. and i don't, i don't believe that you actually miss me. it's been two years, you had moved on during those two years. why are you missing me now?
you nod your head and took a step towards me. "i missed you a lot jeonghan." and i started to feel my nose burn, knowing that i will start tearing up any second now. you were just telling another lie. that's what you did, that's what you, choi seungcheol, do when you feel like the whole world is against you, you lie to get out of it. we hadn't spoken in ages due to me confessing my feelings and you just running away, yet suddenly you miss me? sounds like bullshit."did you want to see me cause you miss her?" you let out a sigh and shook your head. "i told you, it's just because i missed you."
ever since your girlfriend dumped you, you've gone out drinking and been calling me and that feels like the only time i matter to you. it's when you need something from me. or maybe it's because i'm the only one who would always pick up your calls no matter what. i nod and slowly sat down on the bridge and leaned my back against the railing, you do the same."how are you?"
it was a simple question, but we started talking for hours about how our lives have been and even bringing up old inside jokes from years ago. things like me finally being able to move out of my parents' house or how you've been able to finally get a job that was suitable for you. we just talked but it felt good. it felt good to be able to have shared this moment with you.
after about an hour, you stood up and started stretching your limbs and let out a big yawn. "that was nice, i missed talking to you jeonghan." you said smiling except this one, it was a happy and cheerful one. your best smile. i too let out a smile and looked up at you, "this was nice, we should do this again someday." you nod your head and you start leaving.
but i knew that 'someday' would never come. this was a one time thing and maybe it's stupid but i still hoped it would come because when it's with you, i'll be happy. maybe it's stupid to think that you'll ever think of me as more than a convenience.
but no matter how hard i try, i know i'll always pick up your late night calls no matter what they're for.
