"Appreciate what you have before its gone," how many times have we heard that growing up? Usually its your parents telling you because you got spoiled and didnt appreciate a present for your birthday or Christmas. Maybe it was you not appreciating your parents themselves. Thats the way I learned. I was such a little shit to them. No matter what they did for me, it was never good enough. They bought me the new hot toy? Not in the color I wanted. Got me some new clothes, not the right brand. It was such a stupid thing. All they did was step out to get something from the nearby convince store and they got caught up in the middle of a robbery gone wrong. My dad tried to stop the robber and got shot for it and they killed my mom as she ran to my dad. That was also the day I learned heroes don't exist, not the ones in comic books or real life. The amount of times I heard, "I'm sorry for your loss" could never make up for the never hearing they caught the guy who did it. They never did catch the guy who did it, he is still out there today. I truly and wholly learned that I really didn't know how great my parents were till they werent there anymore. My dad's last words to me rang in my ears for the rest of my life, "Appreciate what you have before its gone..."
Paulo woke up from the dream in a sweat. The day he was told his parents died had replayed in his head every night for the last 15 years. He was 13 when it happened and even now it still caused him so much pain. He looked at his wife, asleep next to him, and the words his father said rang in his head again "Appreciate what you have..." Paulo never took anything for granted since that day. He lived his entire life making sure that anyone and everyone special to him knew how much he appreciated them. He also lived his life knowing that no one would ever save those he loved because no one was there that day. He went back to sleep, it was 3am and he had work in a few hours. Yessica would want help with the baby before he left so he had to get whatever rest he could.
Paulo's job wasnt anything fancy but it payed the bills. He worked at a counseling agency working with traumatized kids... an apt job. It made him feel like he was contributing to making the world a better place. But today...today was different. On his way home, he realized that...everyone was acting strange. He noticed that every SINGLE person was staring at the sky. For the first few blocks of the drive he just thought that maybe there was some funny sky-writer or something of the sort but then he realised how many people were out on the streets looking up. As he was about to turn the corner onto the main street he realized that traffic was at a complete stand still and everyone was out of their cars. Paulo had to see what had everyone so wrapped up. He got out of his car and looked in the direction everyone else was looking and thats when he saw it. In the sky, above all the buildings, floating there as if it belonged, was a hole... yes, a hole. Sitting there in the bright blue sky, a black hole. As if just that single space in the sky decided it was night time. As if this wasnt surprising enough that wasnt the only thing there. Not far from the hole in the sky was what looked like a man. Yes, it had to be a man but that was impossible. This was the real world. This wasnt a comic book. People didnt fly unless they were in a plane but there in plain sight for the entire city to see was this man flying. Unless everyone else on this street was seeing something different, it had to be real. The man was not alone though. What Paulo was about to witness, would be the end of life as he knew it.
