Blowing up the gym

It was a normal day. I woke up to my stepmom yelling at me to get up. I got out of bed and made lunch for my family before running after the bus. Yep. A normal day for me. I miss the bus so I have to run to school. It took me an hour to get there. I'm already 5 minutes late for the second class of the day. PE. I race into the gym just as the teacher calls out "Isabelle Hunter?". "I'm here sir!" I trip on my untied shoelaces and fall on my face. The others laugh. Mr. Miller glares at me and stated " Well Miss Hunter if you decide to show up late once again, I will have to give you after-school detention for a month. Now kindly please take your seat." The other students laughed again and I swallowed my tears. I can't cry. Not again. Not another breakdown. Besides shouldn't I be used to things like this now?  I couldn't afford another detention. My stepmom had already threatened a grounding for the rest of my life if I got another detention.

I walk over to my best friend Kylie who was sitting up the back and take a seat by her. She was wearing her usual outfit of frayed shorts, a baggy tee, and a pair of white Nikes. She always looked like she should be part of the popular group instead of hanging out with me.

As I sat down, I noticed a new guy in the room who was staring at me. And no, It wasn't an "I'm interested in you cuz you're cute" look. It was a seriously creepy, almost murderous look. I immediately looked away and ignored his stares. I was used to it. I was an odd-looking girl to be fair and honest. Choppy black hair and stormy grey eyes that had seen a million things. On top of that, I dressed like a hobo. Today's outfit? filthy tracksuit pants, my dad's old shirt, and a hoody I found.  I couldn't help being like that though. I was almost homeless. I never knew my real mom. Dated my dad, had me then left. Poor Pops was working day and night at the local market trying to earn enough for us to survive. Stepmom was too busy watching the Kardashians to even bother about helping. I did a few things here and there to earn money but somehow she always found it and used it for her prescriptions. Which reminded me, I needed to pick up Dad's new prescription from the chemist.

I looked around the room as Mr. Miller spoke and I noticed something really odd. The new guy had inched closer to me and was still glaring at me, and the strange thing was, he looked bigger than when I last saw him. And it wasn't because he had moved closer to me. No. He had actually almost doubled in size. I glanced at Kylie and she seemed to have noticed him too. What scared me was the look on her face. She looked terrified. Now believe me when I say that she was never scared. She grew up with a background similar to mine but she was better off. She had seen worse than I had; so to see her like this came as a massive shock to me. I now saw a different side to her that I had never seen before. I asked her why she was scared and she whispered "I want you to make an excuse to go to the bathroom and as soon as you get out, I want you to run for your life and hide. You have my number, so I will text you when it is over." I went to ask her what she meant but she nudged me and pointed at the teacher. I rolled my eyes and shot my hand into the air. "What is it now Miss Hunter?" Mr. Miller glowered at me. " I need to go to the bathroom." A growl shook through the bleachers. I looked over at the guy and I swear his eyes were constantly changing. Somehow though, no one heard him or reacted to his strange demeanor. Odd.

I turned to Mr. Miller and he grunted and shook his hand in a clear gesture for me to leave. I got up and ran towards the door but before I could get there, I heard a crash and kids started screaming, so I turned and what I saw made me want to run and hide. A massive monster; the size of the Empire State (kinda exaggerated) and the color of darkened puke, was picking up the bleachers and started throwing them toward me. I realized just in time and ducked just as the first one slammed into the door behind me, sealing it shut.

I frantically searched for Kylie and finally found her trying to hustle the other kids out of the other exit. I ran over to her and yelled in her ear asking her what the heck the monster was. She yelled back " It's a cyclops! RUN!".

Hang on, hang on. what? Weren't those things myths? At least that's what I was led to believe. Till now. I spun around and looked at the creature. Yep. Definitely a cyclops. An ugly one at that.  He turned and spotted me and ran towards me, the ground shaking every time he took a step. When he was 5 feet away, he stopped.

He had a studded baton in his hand and he was clearly wanting to use it on me. He raised it high but before he could bring it down on me, Kylie was suddenly there and launching a dagger at him. I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that it would kill him, but boy was I wrong. It just bounced off his stomach. Crap. He glanced down at the knife protruding from his overly obese stomach,  then turned to her and backhanded her to the other side of the gym where she collapsed and lay motionless. I screamed at him to get his attention back on me. Such a dumb idea Isabelle. Because it worked sooner than I had hoped. He spun around and brought his baton down and I managed to roll away just as it hit the spot where I had been standing.

Shaking, I got back up again and as the anger inside me built, I felt a tugging in my gut. It made me feel nauseous. The air pressure dropped, popping my ears. The air smelled of sparking electricity. My hair stood up straight. 'Someone, please help me', I thought to myself as I ran towards the creature. I stopped right in front of him and looked up. He looked and smelled disgusting. Ooze that was hard to distinguish dribbled from his overly hairy nose and grotesque mouth. His bloodshot eye stared down at me and turned upward as he grinned evilly. Thunder crackled overhead even though it was a clear day. Weird. But I took no notice as I had other things to worry about. He raised his baton again and I closed my eyes giving up, just as lightning struck through the roof and into the cyclops, exploding him into golden powder. After a few minutes, the thunder stopped and the air pressure dropped to normal. I watched the powder as it slowly dissolved into the ground and disappeared.
