A terrible storm raged outside. Darkness swirled in layers across the sky. Rain battled against the windows, wanting to be let in furious at being denied. It shook the glass and the wind howled in unison. A boy sat in bed, book in hand, occasionally staring at the chaos outside through his bedroom window. A fierce delight lit up his countenance whenever the thunder rumbled outside.

Ark Winchester, age ten, a delight to have in class.

7 Years Later

Macy was late for class. Again. She'd been consistently late for the first class of the year for the past 6 years. It was beyond Ark's powers of comprehension. She insisted that it took her time to find an outfit and get her makeup done but she just had 4 outfits. She rotated them. It was the first day of the semester and Mr. Wilson would assign them project partners for the rest of the term. Ark didn't want to end up with someone he didn't know because he had a peculiar work ethic and he liked working alone. Only Macy understood him. They had been best of friends since childhood and they were neighbors. She stayed at his place most of the time. Their guestroom had been converted into her room.

He slinked into his favorite corner seat and placed his satchel beside him. According to him, it was the best seat in the class. He had the wall on one side and Macy on the other; partially protected from the eyes of the world. He took out his notebook. It had a tattered black cover and the yellowed pages were falling apart. He had an extensive collection of cute mechanical pencils that he kept in a black leather pouch. He picked the powder blue one which had turtles drawn on it. He opened Pinterest and started jotting down romantic quotes in his notebook. He was working on a romance novel, and his chapters' reviews weren't great. He got a lot of comments criticizing his writing style. Many people told him that his chapters weren't more engaging and enticing because he didn't incorporate more dialogue and it greatly upset him because he was not great at conversations, he enjoyed silence and felt comfortable in it. Macy understood and they mostly lazed around the house playing video games or watching television.

He looked up at the clock on the wall and frowned. Macy was late late. He pulled out his phone and sent her a text.

Ark: Hey, where are you? Class is about to start.

Macy: Sorry, I overslept. Be there soon.

Ark rolled his eyes.

Ark: You better hurry up. Mr. Wilson is going to assign project partners today.

Macy: Ugh, I hate group projects. I hope we get paired up.

Ark smiled to himself, he couldn't imagine doing anything without her.

Ark: I hope we get paired up too. I don't want to work with anyone else. Especially Reese the crackhead. She made me do all the work last term. Remember?

Ughhhhhhh

Just hurry up

Idiot

Macy: Same. You were lucky you had Reese. I ended up with booger boy and he kept flirting with me and touching me with those filthy hands. Fucking moron.

I'll be there in 15.

*pink heart*

XOXO

Ark tucked his phone back into his pocket and continued jotting down quotes in his notebook.

Mr. Wilson entered the class and set his binder upon the desk. It was overflowing with sticky notes. He took off his coat and draped it on the chair. Ms. Honeywhiskers the campus cat followed him in and began clawing at his trousers. He picked her up and put her upon his shoulder, she let out a contented purr. He stroked her back and kissed her head. Satisfied, she jumped out of his arms and walked out of the class. He adjusted his tie, cleared his throat and laid out the materials for class.
