Chapter Three

The dreary November light crawled into my room in the morning, waking me up. Through my sleepy eyes, I looked around my room. Nothing had changed. Still the same old bedroom. The same old “Quin” sign hanging over the door, the same pictures of my friends and family from various trips on my wall, the same mirror with stickers from my favorite bands covering it, the same number calling my cell phone. Wait a second, that wasn’t a number I knew. I didn’t know what to do but answer it, which I did.

“Hello?” I asked.

“Hi, Quin?” the voice on the other end answered, “It’s me, Marco? Yeah, I was wondering how you were.”

I realised that it was Marco. This was the first time he had contacted me since the party, at least two weeks ago. “Hey, I’m good, how are you? I haven’t heard from you in a while.”

“Yeah, I’m great, thanks for asking. So, I was wondering, would you like to have dinner with me? Maybe this weekend?” He asked sheepishly. I started to blush uncontrollably. This had never happened. All the guys I’ve dated were total knuckle-heads. They just took me to the movies and had their moms pick me up.

“Um… Yeah, that sounds great! I would love to. What time?” I responded excitedly.

“I’m not sure yet, but I’ll text you the details. Sounds good?” He sounded happy.

“Sounds great, okay well I’ve got to get ready for school now, so I talk to you later?” I hoped he would text me and not stand me up.

“Sure, have a great day, Quin, bye.” He said before he hung up. I pressed ‘end’ on the phone and crawled out of bed.

I got ready for school with a mile-wide grin on my face. I was so excited for the weekend. Though it was only Monday, I had a good feeling about this week.

Soon enough, I was ready for school and out the door. Since my parents worked and couldn’t drive me, I took the bus. The bus was late so I was left standing out in the November cold for fifteen minutes. It was colder than I had expected, so I was shivering by the time the bus showed up. I eagerly jumped on the bus as soon as the doors opened. I showed the driver my pass, threw my stuff onto a seat and plopped down beside it. I almost didn’t notice the small voice trying to talk to me as I had turned my music up very loudly.

“Um…excuse me miss…can I please sit here?” A little girl with blonde pigtails and a Disney princess dress asked me sheepishly. My heart melted and I immediately picked up my stuff to let the cutest little girl sit down beside me.

As soon as she sat down she started talking. She started telling me about how she was going to the pool today.  I didn’t know what to do but listen to her. The only thing that was on my mind was wondering who was taking her to the pool and where they were. A few seconds later, a boy with blonde short hair and piercing blue eyes climbed onto the bus. He was carrying few bags that looked kind of heavy. He heaved them over to where I was sitting with the little girl. He rolled his eyes at her and put his bags down next to her.

He looked at me and said, “I’m sorry about her, she ran onto the bus before I could catch her.  Sorry if she got in your way.” To her he said, “Becky, you can’t just run ahead of me like that, I’ve told you not to. And what did I say about talking to strangers? I told you not to.”

I chuckled at how exasperated he was and his apology. “It’s okay, really. She was telling me about how she was very excited that she was going to the pool today.”

The little girl, Becky spoke up, continuing our conversation. “And we get there I going to change into the new bathing suit Travy bought me and we’re going to go on the slide and in the lazy river and in the pool and we’re going to go on floaties, and then we’re going to get ice cream after. I like ice cream, I think I’ll get strawberry, or bubble gum, those are my favorite. But I might want mint chocolate chip, that’s my second favorite. Or third. I’m not sure.” The little girl didn’t stop talking, but started having a conversation with herself about ponies. The boy beside her, I assumed his name was Travy, mouthed another apology. I just smile and waved it off.
