"christopher!" i yell out, scooping him off of the ground. his crutches clink together and he wounds his small arms around my neck.
"angie!" he exclaims back, giggling joyously.
that catches eddie's attention, who jogs over and hugs us both. i lean into his chest and watch as he presses a small kiss to his sons cheek.
the rest of the team kind of knows whats going on between us, so we dont care about hiding it from them.
"five alarm school crisis." carla smiles softly. "his teacher needs to know what hes bringing in for show and tell on friday."
"and so he suckered you in to stopping here along the way." eddie grins.
"you know i cant resist a cute face." carla laughs.
i set chris down on the ground and help him fix his crutch before squeezing his cheeks.
"who would with this little face?" i mumble, making him laugh. he steps forwards and hugs me again, squeezing me tightly.
"so. show and tell." eddie thinks out loud. "i thought you were bringing your new hamster?"
"oh. havent you heard? the hamster is old news. someone went snooping in your closet." carla smiles, digging a box out of her purse.
eddie lets out a tiny sigh when he sees it and opens it gently. a silver star. his face suddenly goes blank and i set my hand on his back, letting him slowly come back to us in the present.
"its a silver star 'cause my dads a hero." christopher says with a giant smile.
eddie looks up with a sad smile. "he sure is, chris." i ruffle the boys hair.
"are you sure this is what you want to bring to show and tell on friday?" eddie asks, shutting the box.
"and you. so you can tell the story." chris says.
"i dont know if that would be too appropriate for fourth graders, buddy." carla says.
"please, please, please!!" christopher begs his dad.
"ill figure something out." eddie assures the boy.
"you promise?" chris grins widely.
"i promise. you. me. and telling fourth grader appropriate war stories." eddie laughs slightly. suddenly the bell rings and everyone around us rushes.
"okay, buddy. we have to go. i'll see you soon, okay?" i lean down to hug him tightly. he kisses my cheek and i jump into action, pulling my gear from my locker and shoving it on.
-
"30 minutes. see you then." cap says.
eddie clicks the start on his timer and begins lowering into the hole.
a little boy is stuck in a narrow well. eddie volunteered to go down a hole that we dug a few feet next to the well.
i want to stop him. i want to pull him up right now and hold him to make sure hes okay. and stays okay.
but i cant. because i know we all want so badly to make sure this boy is okay.
the rain is coming down heavy now, causing the dirt to get muddy and possibly collapse on top of him.
30 minutes.
no one realizes just how much can happen in 30 minutes.
a car accident.
a plane crash.
a shooting.
a war.
a cut rope.
when evan pulls up the cut rope, i cant hold back the yell that comes out.
"eddie!" i scream, feeling my heart speed up.
evan holds me back from jumping in the well myself.
i dont know whats happening down there. i need to know. i need to know what eddie was thinking when he cut that rope. i need to know if hes okay.
i need to know that he will make it out.
chim gets ready to go down, slowly descending into the hole.
just a second later, evan pulls him up. the little boy is in his arms and his mother immediately runs over, gathering him in her arms.
"eddies fine. he just needs a ride." chim smiles.
i nearly cry knowing that hes okay.
chim climbs out of the hole and gets ready to send another line down when lightning strikes the structure next to us.
"bobby!" i yell, tackling him right before the structure falls on top of him.
he coughs loudly before i turn and realize that the exact spot that the hole was at is where there is now a pile of mud.
"eddie! no, no, no, no, no!" i scream, slipping and sliding in the mud as i start to dig with my hands. "please! please be okay, please."
i start to sob, falling back onto my knees.
"angeline. come on. lets get you inside." hen says, patting my shoulder softly.
i cant breathe.
she pulls me up and holds me by the waist and helping me towards the house.
she pushes me down onto a chair on the porch and crouches in front of me.
"eddie is going to be fine, ann. hes stronger than you think. he will get out for you and christopher, okay?" she says softly.
"hes so strong and thats what worries me. hes too damn strong." i cry. hen immediately takes me into her arms, allowing me to sob into her.
i let everything out into her shoulder, letting it be washed away by the rain hitting us softly.
i need to pull myself together. i can help the team figure out how to get eddie out safely.
i pull back and blink away my tears to the best of my ability.
"we need to help." is all i say.
hen nods and helps me up before we make our way back to the team.
