Gun fire filled the streets of my hometown, scaring my little sister Rue to tears. “Shh,” I whispered to her, running my shaky fingers threw her messy auburn hair. “This war will be over soon.” No one in my household had spoken for the past two days. Just the slight nod, and the startled glances as another scream was heard. This war has gotten out of hand, the devil was surely making his mark on this town. Ashton, my best friend carefully placed his pale hand onto mine, and he gave me a surprising reassuring smile, that made me jump.

Why would he smile in these dark selfless times? His eyes looked black in the dim light of the candle. I would have to bet I looked disturbing right now as well. My skin probably looked sickly pale, my eyes probably looked like gold, and my auburn hair probably looked like I had slept months in the dumpster. I looked back down at Rue, who now held back her tears. She's so strong for only being eight. So mature. So mature that it scares me.

Suddenly my body felt extremely hot, I gasped in pain, making Ashton take Rue. “What's wrong?” he whispered, frantic, trying to look into my eyes.

“The devil. Is after me....” I whispered. “I-I.”

Hello Dawn.

A jolt went threw my body, making my lips quiver. This couldn't be happening. Not here, not in front of Rue. “Dawn,” I looked up not seeing Ashton, but seeing a monster. It looked like a shadow with blood red eyes, and it held Rue.

“Let her go!” I screamed, grabbing a wrench that laid on the ground for emergencies.

“What are you talking about?!” the shadow snarled. I screamed, as I hit the shadow with a wrench over and over again, black blood covering my arms. Rue shrieked as she fell onto the ground, cowering away from me. As I looked down I saw, Ashton. He coughed up blood, the devil had tricked me. I began to pull my hair, shaking, I began to cry kneeling on the ground. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?!” I yelled at the ceiling, my fist pounding on the ground.

“Dawn?” I jolted awake, sitting up looking around me at the shack. Everything seemed normal from what I could tell. The creaking floor boards, the dust making the air thick, and the dim sunlight coming from the cracks in the walls. I looked over seeing Rue, sitting on Ashton's lap looking at me- worry in her eyes.

“Yes Rue?” my voice cracked.

“I think the war has put us into a delusional state,” Ashton sighed, as he let Rue slide off his lap. “You were screaming in your sleep again.”

I shrugged, trying to forget the horrid dream, “It wasn't that bad.”

He glared at me, “You were yelling, 'What have you done to me?!' over and over again. Surely your dream wasn't okay.”

“Well, it's nothing to worry about. It was just a dream.”

“Well, no matter what. You must eat, we still have some bread left-it's stale, but it should do.”

“Alright, thanks.” I walked over to the corner and grabbed a piece of bread splitting it in half, my stomach yelling for the food.

“Where's Mom?” Rue asked, taking the other half of bread.

“Rue, haven't you ate already?”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe? Rue put that down and give it to Ashton.”

“No, it's fine. Go ahead Rue,” Ashton replied.

“But you haven't ate,” I argued.

“I'm fine, Dawn.”

“Where's Mom?!” Rue shrieked, making me jump.

“Searching for food,” I replied.

Ashton gave me a nervous glance. We knew the chances of their safety was slim. With the war going on, many have went insane. Safety has been hard to come by, let alone be at peace. Sometimes I wonder if this is reality, or if the devil is playing tricks on my mind. It's possible-I mean, time could stop for hours and we would have no idea. But I suppose that's life right? Just living, not thinking about this kind of stuff. It will just make you go crazy.

Suddenly I heard pounding on the front door, making my body grow cold and weary. “Rue, go hide, I don't care where. If I'm not back in ten minutes get out of here, okay?” I hissed.

“Okay,” she hesitated as she walked away, “But Dawn...”

“Just go!” She ran off now, and I inhaled sharply. “Ready?” I nodded to Ashton, as I grabbed a wrench.

As I neared the door I heard a women cry “Help me! Help me! Help me please! I have children that need to be saved and spared! Please!”

I gripped my wrench tighter, not trusting this plead. But I couldn't help but wonder. “She's faking it, probably the devil playing tricks,” Ashton warned me. “Don't answer.”

“Please! Please! My children need me! Hurry, there coming! I don't have much time to spare,” I cringed at the sound of the woman's voice. She sounded so terrified, so sad... I hesitated, before lowering my hand onto the handle.

“No, stop Dawn,” Ashton hissed sharply.

I turned the knob... Suddenly the door smashed down on top of me, pain filling my chest. “Ashton!” I shrieked as a shadow began to creep up to Ashton.

The shadow began to laugh, a sharp rasping laugh that made me sick to the core. I threw the door off of me, shaking as I stood. The shadow backed Ashton in the corner. Ashton began to try and hit the shadow with his knife, but missed. I ran at it, wrench ready-and then suddenly it sucked me into oblivion.......
