Nachum's POV
I aggressively started wiping my arm where he placed his dirty fingers and pressed the doorbell to my house. I kept rubbing the extra unfamiliar germs off of myself in disgust as I waited. Fingers crossed mom won't be home to start yelling in Spanish.
I hate it when she does. Whenever mom lectures me in screams, it feels as if the house will collapse and all my blood veins will explode. Hoping that the vice principal didn't call home, I squinted my eyes with all hopes and dreams in place.
"Nacho? You're home early."
Penelope's soft and soothing voice, medium pitch as it felt like a soft pillow you'd hug with happiness. I sighed in relief knowing it wasn't mi madre with a chancla in her hand. Penelope's face didn't boil with anger. Instead, she observed me from top to bottom and squinted her eyes. "Aren't you supposed to be at practice?"
"Yes–well no." I shake my head and change the subject. "Is mom home?" I'd whisper to her and lower my head as I tug on my backpack. Penelope's a smart girl, so she'd flick the switch in seconds.
Penelope answered right away with a shake of her head, "Why? Are you in trouble?"
"Kind of.." My sister let me in the house and followed me as I dropped my bag on a chair in the dining room. She poked her head through the corridor as I turned my head around after I was done settingly in.
"'Kind of'?" Nels frowns and looks at me with puppy eyes. What was she thinking? That her big brother who's only a minute older than her suddenly doing something awful that caused him to not go to an afterschool activity he usually goes to out of the blue? No. That's a big assumption, but I did admit that I got in trouble. It was a relief the vice didn't assign me a morning detention. If I did, Mom's definitely gonna whoop my ass till it's red and let the world see that red.
"What caused such pain in my brother's eyes?" she asked me quietly. This poor child acted like I was about to scold her.
I reassured her with a smile and cupped her cheeks, "Brother is fine," I chuckled and she puffed her cheeks like a child. Having a loving sister is the best, but you are the one who must act right despite your sibling being awful themselves,"but if you must know, Garrett happened."
Finally, her eyelids dropped unimpressed. "Really? Garrett? That white boy has to learn to shut the fuck up."
I agreed. I explained to her that he said something dislikable, and suddenly, I punched him out of nowhere. It was my fault overall like how a car accident would be decided upon. However, I couldn't control my own actions as I acted without thought. My bad, O'birdie. Who knew your unstoppable mouth would cause great monstrosity?
"Don't care. You and Maymay did your best to teach him a lesson." Maymay was a nickname she gifted to Maynard. Mine is Nacho or Chumchum. Don't know how she comes up with these things, but it's incredibly stupid. I love her so much, but my nicknames need improvement. Please help. I don't want to be called Chums forever as if I'm one of those stereotypical fat kids who like to eat and make a mess. I'm not like that at all. I do like to eat, but I don't make messes (often). Accidental drops of food, yes. Spills? Not unless it's days I radiate clumsiness.
I nod and plant a kiss on the top of her head. "Come on, do tell big brother what kind of yummy snacks you've cooked while I was out after school."
"Churros!" She giggles and leads the way to the kitchen. I sniffed the air and nodded. Sounds about right. Smells like Penelope's special churros to me with cinnamon powder on top. Mom's gonna love these and forget all about my unfamiliar antics.
"Yum yum," I hum, "may I have one?"
She slapped my hand before I could reach for one and shook her head. She pointed right at the sink with a glare. "Wash your hands first. You just got home, so I don't know what dog shit you couldn't keep your paws away from." Ouch. Her future husband is gonna get scolded every time he doesn't wash his hands after coming home from work.
