I passed out for an hour after I downed the bottle of rum. The air was thick when I awoke. It was heavy in my throat and I was extremely lightheaded. I gasped for air and sat up abruptly black smoke filling my lungs. I'm extremely lightheaded, looking around for shade, spotting her limp body on the bed.
I quickly grab her and try to run out of the house, falling to the ground and heaving heavily as I crawl to the front door, making it outside and into my "Yard". Staring up at my home engulfed in flames. Taking in the semi-clean air, I feel my head starting to spin. My eyesight was fading in and out, and the ringing in my ears was so loud that even covering them had no help for me.
Once I grasped the feeling of living again, I started making my way farther into the forest. Shade laid in my arms, still breathing, (thankfully). After an hour or two of running I stopped and layed on the ground, my chest violently moving up and down. My heart is beating so hard I can hear it in the still quiet darkness louder than everything.
I lay shade next to me, turning over and pulling her into my chest, holding her from all the elements of the dangerous outside world. I run my hands through her soft fur, reminding myself of the day I first got her. I held her just like this, protecting her from the thundering sky at my home. The new place being frightening enough, a storm didn't help; but I wasn't complaining when a soft ball of warmth cuddled me.
I look up at the cloudy night sky, watching as the tree tops move in the wind, it being the only coolness on the hot summer night. The grass around us acting as a natural blanket to cushion us from the messy dirt beneath. The dark smoke beginning to cover the moon, sirens starting to come from a little aways.
"Fuck...." I slowly struggled to sit up, dizzy. I held shade as tight as I could as I stood, hobbling into the woods.
