"Won't you please ask Marlene to sign up for Alchemy?" Evangeline pled.
The three Slytherin fifth year girls sat in the shade in the courtyard. Evangeline brought a large parasol to shield her paper white skin from the sun. It would have stuck out more if Pandora hadn't been wearing an emerald green hat with the widest brim any of them had ever seen. Alice liked to tease them about this, insisting they couldn't possibly burn in the shade. It wasn't convincing coming from Alice, who was still shedding from the many hours she'd spent outside over the summer holidays, practicing quidditch plays in her back garden in Kent.
"As if!" Alice protested, "I only put my name down because you two forced my hand. I could care less if they have the course or not. It would be one less thing on my plate."
"But Alice, we could all take it together," said Pandora, who was rather eager to take the course with her favorite potions partner. She hoped Alice would join them as a trio, though she knew it was a long shot.
"I don't want Marls to think I'm using her. I've been pissy all weekend, I can't go asking her for favors now," Alice stood her ground. "Figure it out yourself."
Lily Evans spotted the trio from across the yard and waved. She jogged over to Alice and began discussing patrols. "You'll be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. You're on the East side of the castle. You'll have to coordinate with Dorcas to establish a specific route. I trust you both to figure it out."
"Hey Lily," an idea dawned on Evangeline. "You're good at potions."
"Aw," Lily beamed at the younger girl, "How sweet of you to say. I'm nowhere near as good as Sev, but I try."
"Have you got room in your schedule for another course? Professor Slughorn said he wanted to start an Alchemy course and—"
"Oh!" Lily interrupted in her excitement, "Is he gunning for that again? I signed up last term, but he said we hadn't gotten enough people to warrant an entire course slot."
"Right, he mentioned. But then he said if we get eight signatures by Friday, Dumbledore would let him, and since it's open to fifth years, I reckon we've got a better chance of meeting that figure." Evangeline beamed proudly. She knew Lily was well-loved by most of the school. She hoped that Lily would be able to convince more people than she would, considering she only really spoke to Alice and Pandora. "We've already got three, and you would be four."
"I know Sev would be interested, I'll convince him to sign up. And I know if I mention it to Potter, he'll put it on his schedule. He's already signed up for every other course I'm in," Lily said this with a twinge of annoyance, "but in this case it will work in our favor."
"That's perfect!" Evangeline exclaimed, her excitement growing by the moment, "Then we just need two more."
"I'd ask Remus, I'm sure he'd be interested, but nobody's seen him all of yesterday or today," said Lily.
