"She... she had cancer?" Eathan's voice wavered, the statement coming out more like a question.

"Yes," the doctor confirmed. "You didn't know? It seems she's been dealing with it for about two years. She found out a few months ago, and now it's reached a critical stage. If she isn't operated on within the next two months, she might not survive." His voice was gentle, but his gaze was sharp, watching as Eathan stood frozen, lost in thought.

"And you know, cancer is a very serious—"

"Enough," Eathan cut him off, his voice cold and final. "If she didn't want me to know, she had her reasons. Do whatever you need to, but leave me out of it." Without another word, he turned and stormed out of the room.

The doctor stood in stunned silence. He hadn't realized the situation was this complicated. Perhaps this was what Amilea meant when she said telling Eathan wouldn't make things better.

As Eathan strode past the waiting area, he didn't spare a single glance at Maya and Mirabel. Maya, already anticipating his reaction, caught Mirabel's wrist before she could run after him.

"Mira, sit here. I'll go talk to your dad," she said softly. "Your mom will be fine—don't cry, okay?"

Mirabel nodded, sniffing as she wiped at her tears. Maya gave her a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder before rushing after Eathan.

She caught up to him just as he reached the hospital's reception, his pace swift, his body tense as if he couldn't wait to escape.

"EATHAN!" Maya's sharp voice rang out, stopping him in his tracks. He turned just as she reached him, slightly out of breath, her eyes blazing with frustration.

"You're nothing but a coward—always running away from your problems instead of facing them!"

Eathan stiffened, caught off guard by her outburst.

"Are you seriously going to leave her like this? She hasn't done anything to you! It's not her fault she met you, let alone fell in love with someone like you. Even if you can't think of her, what about your daughter? Who's going to take care of her? Tell me!" Maya's voice trembled with barely contained fury. "Just because I've stayed quiet doesn't mean I don't see how you treat her every single day."

Eathan's expression darkened. "Maya, stay out of this. You wouldn't understand what marriage is like. You're 37 and still not married. Maybe if you stopped interfering in other people's lives, you'd finally find a husband," he snapped, the words dripping with bitterness.

Maya didn't even blink. Her gaze remained locked onto his, steady and unyielding.

"Just like Amilea found you, right?" she shot back. "The way you treated her as if she should never have existed. The way she expected you to believe in her, to trust her during misunderstandings, to be there for her. But no—you were too busy chasing money. You chose lifeless banknotes over your own family, Eathan! You are a disgrace to my father's name. Nothing but a coward!"

With those words, she shoved him back with surprising force and stormed away, her body trembling with rage.

Eathan stood there, frozen, his jaw clenched so tightly it ached.
