The wind coming from the farmer's market smelled sweet and it led to the colorful stands of delicious produce and treats. The most anticipated stands at the fair had lines stretching down to the gravel parking lot lined with trailers and pickup trucks in uniform rows.
All was well at the farmer's market. But don't be deceived.
The calm and peaceful atmosphere hid the stench of a deep-rooted rivalry between farms.
Mclarson Apple Farm always had a large selection of goodies ranging from craft apple cider to their signature apple pies. They always delivered and all their customers contributed to the mason jar that sat on the counter.
Clink went the quarters little by little as the morning turned to late afternoon. On the other side of the fence, so to speak, was the Gordon's Garlic Farm's stand. They may not have as many options as the apple farmers did, but their hospitality and close-knit team of farmers was as good a pairing as the garlic bread and butter they sold.
Their garlic bread had the perfect crunch in their crust and the rest of it melted in your mouth. Their garlic butter could take a humble slice of sourdough and transform it into the kind of garlic bread that would cost a fortune at a fancy Italian restaurant. The Mclarson head farmer, Gregory Mclarson and the head of Gordon farm, Thomas Gordon, have been competing with each other since the founding of the farms back in the 1800s.
The fair was their battleground.
They refer to each other as Greedy Greg and Terrible Tom.Yep, their hatred ran deep.
That was until an abandoned building became a clinic overnight.
