There's no way to describe the butterflies in your stomach when you start courting the prettiest girl in class because it's what everyone expects you to do and end up falling for her younger brother instead. You are on a rollercoaster that never stops, free-falling through a black hole that sucks you in and never lets you go, because he is a wildfire, and he burns you alive.
Or when you've been best friends with him for two years but in love with him for much longer, and you tell him so with his name melting on your tongue even though you know he'll never talk to you again. But your lips are rose and his are gold and there is molten sugar dripping over your skin as he carves a space for you in his personal universe, a champagne flare in the silence of the storm.
Or when he shows up in front of your dorm at four in the morning, rapidly-lengthening hair soaked from the pouring rain, and he swallows your every breath with a kiss as his wandering fingertips trail stardust over your yearning soul. And you move in together just a year after starting university because you're in love, and sometimes, love is all you need.
(Soobin reaches for Kai every morning, when the sky hangs hazily over his head and the sunlight is something decadently ephemeral over his fingers. Just to know that he's there.)
❥
Five years ago, Soobin would have insisted that he hates mornings with every fibre of his being. They coat his room in cinereal grey and steal precious hours of slumber from his mind. But waking up is easier nowadays, especially when he blinks his eyes open to a warm body draped over his own, limbs so tangled together that he can't tell where he ends and Kai begins.
Kai's skin is warm against his own, heartbeat fluttering beneath Soobin's calloused fingers as he traces them over the curve of his chest and the bend of his throat. For a moment, Soobin just stares, soaking in the sight of the sunlight trickling over Kai's collarbones and painting his hair gold, letting his boyfriend's pulse flow over his hands until their hearts beat as one. He runs his palms over smooth, sinewy limbs, hard muscle and soft skin pliant beneath Soobin's yearning touch.
When Kai's long lashes finally flutter open, Soobin waits for the inevitable smile that always follows. He's not disappointed. Kai's perfect lips curl up in a big grin, all straight white teeth and love-drunk edges, as he murmurs, "Good morning, beautiful."
Soobin pouts, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend and pulling him into his chest. "That's supposed to be my line."
"Suck it up. It's mine now." With a lilting giggle, Kai tilts his face up to press a chaste kiss on Soobin's lips, releasing a thousand butterflies in his stomach. "Happy Valentine's Day, Soobin."
Soobin feels a smile cross his own mouth as he returns the kiss eagerly, something syrupy in the lazy sprawl of their long limbs and the way Kai presses one slender palm into Soobin's bare chest as their lips weave a symphony between their souls. "Happy Valentine's Day, angel."
A knobbly finger digs into his side, making Soobin wheeze. "You're so cheesy," Kai complains, the mock scrunch of his nose dissipating into raucous giggles that ignite a fire in Soobin's heart.
"Only for you," Soobin teases, pulling Kai closer to him and kissing him again. The crisp white sheets are cool on his skin as he tosses them aside, sunlight spilling over every dip and curve of Kai's beautiful form. He's the most gorgeous thing Soobin will ever hold, will ever touch, will ever see---and as he gently bumps Kai's nose and twines their hands together, he wonders how he'd ever gotten this lucky. "I missed you."
Beneath his ebony fringe, tumbling over his forehead in sun-soaked waves, Kai raises an eyebrow. "You see me every day. We literally live together, Soobin."
