God I hate this book, why did they make me read it? The whole premise of this book is that the Daughter of a crime syndicate Leader, is somehow impossibly clueless that her father is a crime boss. Living innocently in luxury while surrounded by guards 24/7 while being told her father has a lot of enemies with no context. The male lead is a detective trying to take that crime syndicate down. One night he breaks protocol and sneaks into their home estate. There while he's hiding, he runs into the crime Boss's daughter. At first he uses the opportunity hoping to get information out of her, only to realize that she has no clue what her father does. Thinking that he's just the head of some company.
So he falls in love with the innocent crime Boss' daughter, planning to reveal the truth to her and get her out of there. She falls for him, because he is simply a new foreign element in her life. So she finds out the truth, but doesn't really do anything except act suspicious of her father for the rest of the book, until the male lead gets her out of there. Also, for some weird reason every single man that meets the Head of Security, the male lead being the only exception, immediately develop a crush on her. The head of security, supposedly being the dropdead, gorgeous villainess of the story.
But for the entirety of the book, we never see her actively doing anything to harm the female lead or the Boss. All she does the entire book is be standing there in the room, looking beautiful, grabbing everyone's attention for literally just standing there, and protecting the Boss and his daughter. The only thing that incriminated her as the villainess in this book, was that she could easily stand toe to toe with the male lead, in fact, the male lead never actually defeated her in a fight, the only time he won, was when he was able to arrest the boss and his men with a warrant. She went voluntarily.
...
The heck is this book? The female lead is boring. The male lead does nothing but daydream about being the prince in shining armor for her and take down her father. The supposed villainess doesn't do anything villainy except work for a crime syndicate. There's nothing in the book that is satisfying for the reader at all unless the only thing you ever care about in a book is the male lead.
Do you want to know what the synopsis was? "Trapped in a dangerous home, Kang Juri is surrounded by enemies, her father is the head of a crime syndicate. Their head of security is always following her, watching her and looking at her with sharp eyes. She is trapped in the house day in and day out. All of the sudden one night she meets a handsome, mysterious man, who was hiding in her closet from the Head of security. He reveals the truth to her about her father, who she believes she was filial to all this time, but never knew the truth. The handsome man disappears into the night, promising to come back for her, and she works from the inside to tell the handsome man about where her father goes and when. With her help, Choi Dohyun is able to uncover all the evidence he needs to take down the crime boss."
That's it, and what plays out is not quite what the synopsis tells you. Because yes, she somehow contacts Dohyun every time her father leaves the house, but that's it. The head of security doesn't just stalk the female lead like the synopsis implies. The boss assigned her to be her personal guard. The head of security barely ever looks at her or talks to her, because she doesn't have to. Her prioritized job is to watch the Boss' daughter. I'm sure she didn't want to be some babysitter either.
I know it's my job to review books, and sometimes I come across bad books, and my company tells me to find a way to praise it, but this is just hot garbage. And I see genuine fans in the comments praising the male lead. I can't lie, I don't care what my boss says. I just can't find a way to praise this.
That night I tried to figure out how to write a review as objective as possible. I sent it into my work through email and laid in bed not being able to forget how upset I am over how bad this book is.
Soon after my editor started blowing up my phone with messages. "WHAT IS THIS?! You're being so rude! 'The Author needs to go outside and touch grass since she seems to desire it so much for the female lead.' ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Fix your review right now or you're not going to have a job when you come in tomorrow!"I reluctantly fixed my review. Begrudgingly writing it from the perspective of if I had the brain of the female lead. I sent it in via email, and passed out in bed, feeling like my energy was spent on pretending to support this garbage writing and like the main leads.
Heck, the Head of Security barely talked and she had way more character than the main leads.I don't know what I was thinking of last, but all I know is whatever the hell it was...brought me a whole lot of trouble. Waking up in a Princess pink bedroom in a poofy white and pink night gown, with a mirror in my room showing a face I didn't recognize.
There was soon a knock at my door with no words.
"C- come in?" When the door opened my eyes met the most beautiful face I've ever seen saying in a soft spoken voice, "Miss, your father wishes to have breakfast with you this morning. Please come down when you're ready." I slowly nodded as I was still stunned and she then closed the door gently.
"WHAT THE HELL?!"
