I would say Karen was okay as a stepmom.
And yes, her name is Karen.
Which I find really freaking hilarious.

Anyway. She wasn't that bad of a person, but I understand where Annabeth's resentment came from. Karen couldn't comprehend the fear of Adrachne's children.
Especially a fear so ingrained in the children of Athena.
After Matt and BB were born, I knew it was getting harder for Karen to separate her attention between 4 children. Her waning patience with our spider phobia not helping.
I ended up stealing our dad's camera from his office and keeping it at my bedside so I could help prove that Annabeths wails were caused by the spiders and not for our dads attention.
We were not liars.
Karen never looked at the photos I took, and eventually, I gave up.
Monster attacks increased, and I started to plan.
I wasn't long after that me and Annabeth ran away.
Leaving the photos out on the kitchen table where everyone could see them.
