Update 2024: Hello, I uploaded the first chapter of this story in early 2023, but something has changed in the editing status. Originally, this story was supposed to be a simple solo story to mark the 12th anniversary of the Rango movie on February 14, 2023, but now it will become part of the Rango Project in the future and will bring this series to an end. Therefore, the continuation of this story will be delayed indefinitely, as the other prequels have to be finished first. Unfortunately, I cannot say when this will be. The very first part of this project is the prolog "The Legend of Rango (Prolog)", which takes place 22 years before the Rango movie. Followed by "Dirtdown", which takes place 15 years before the Rango movie, etc. Here you can read the rest of the chronological list of stories: https://www.wattpad.com/1499767282-new-rango-fanfictions. And as you will see there, "Legends Never Die" is the final. It may even take years before this story can be continued. Until then, I hope you can enjoy reading the previous stories in this Rango series. Pleasant reading! :)
Title was inspired by the song "Legends Never Die" by Ft. Against the Current.

"You and the sheriff are more alike than you think. You're nothing but legends. Pretty soon no one will believe you even existed."—Mayor John.

Water filled the air. Water was everywhere on the ground, covering everyone's clothes. But that didn't bother anyone. Everyone in town was just happy that the water had returned. While Rango and Beans looked after the vanishing rattlesnake with the turtle in his coils, Priscilla ran to Rango and embraced him. "Rango! You brought back the water just like you promised." She hugged the sheriff tightly. "You really are a hero."
Rango giggled, kneeling down to the little aye-aye girl. "Well, the thing about heroes is, whenever you—"
Priscilla lifted her paw in warning. "Rango! Don't spoil it."
Rango stopped, sobered. "Right." He stood up and took Beans by the hand. "Well, I don't know about you, but I could sure go for a dip."
It was dark. Just sparks of fire and ashes danced around him. The chameleon crawled on all fours. His mouth was dry. Just the tears in his eyes moistened his lips.
He touched his leg. He could feel blood and pain. A bullet, he guessed.
"Yes, you are a legend," a voice said behind him, calmly and coldly. "But even legends fade away one day."
The chameleon turned around on the dirty ground, looking at the black big figure in front of him. The revolver was aimed directly at him.
"Soon no one will talk about you anymore", the figure continued. "At the end, you'll be nothing more than someone who turned on the faucet of a tiny, insignificant town in the middle of nowhere."
He heard an ominous click, echoing through his ears in the thinning air around him, closely followed by an ominous laugh.
"For the last hero, the last bullet—how fitting."
The chameleon closed his eyes.
