Warning READ WITH CAUTION
This story takes place during a WAR. This book will be TRIGGERING so if you are uncomfortable I suggest you don't proceed. Your mental health matters!I attempted to mask the sounds of bombs with my booming voice.
They were mostly active at night. The mostly empty streets were destroyed from perpetual air strikes. All was left was the rubble of leftover neighbouring homes. I would know because I took a peak as mom was shutting the windows of our small apartment building with wood. The realization hit us that we were the only ones left.
Where were the rescue teams? The soldiers who got everyone else in the neighbourhood? Why were we the only ones left?
"Ella!" I boom as another bomb could be heard from another neighbourhood.
Mom is quick to silence me.
" Tommy please." Momma begs as she's turning the knob of a radio. She hasn't left the battery powered radio since the people in our small apartment building have been forgotten.
I feel another air strike about to hit. You can tell by the gut wrenching feeling that settles in your tummy, like when you have the flu or bring home a bad report card. I need to distract her though. I breathe in deeply, "Ella!" I hold for as long as the aftershocks last.
"For goodness sake, Tommy!" Moms voice raises aloud, though not as loud as mine.
The door pounds moments later. "Tommy go to your room." Momma rushes past me.
I hide in the hallway to eavesdrop. "Keep your boy quiet or we will all be paying the consequences for his actions." The angry neighbour Randal bellows as Momma apologizes profoundly.
When Randal stalks away I notice just how tired Momma is. It shows in her worry lines and every crevice on her face. I wish I could take every wrinkle and wear it proudly on me as a badge of honour. I will do what I have to in order to protect my family. I'm the man of the house now.
Dad is long gone by now. Wherever he is. I just wish he was here to tell me what to do. What a man should do. But dad would understand if I were to cower away every once in a while.
Momma goes back to her staticky radio.
I turn to enter Ella's room.
