The One Where I Fell

Dark.

Darker.

Yet darker.

It was so dark.

And I had no idea why.

I knew I was falling. But I didn't know where I was falling to. Where did I fall from, anyway?

Mount Ebbott. My class and I were on a camping trip, and I climbed the mountain to get the strong kids to like me. It was a tall mountain, and getting where I was when I fell was exhausting.

I thought I fell off Mount Ebbott, but that didn't make sense. I should have seen the sun, trees and campsite. I should have seen the mountain getting bigger and broader as my field of vision was brought closer to the base. But instead, all I saw was... Darkness.

Pure darkness.

Liquid black, like getting chlorine in my eyes at the pool and having to resurface to clean them in the bubbler.

But even with pool water in my eyes, I could still see shapes. This was just...

Dark.

And then...

I wasn't falling anymore.

I was on the ground, and I didn't even hurt that much. No broken bones or scraped knees. As far as I could feel, anyway. Maybe I was paralyzed. Maybe I couldn't feel anything from an adrenaline rush. Maybe I was dead.

I wouldn't have been surprised if I were dead.

It felt like I had fallen for ages, years even. Like I had grown old and weary in the fall. Almost like time had been thrown into the future. But that only happened in stories, right? That wasn't possible.

I opened my eyes, preparing for light. Preparing for God to look down at my body in shambles and help me up with His hand. Preparing for something dead-like to happen. But instead, I saw a flower.

A flower? This far down? That shouldn't be possible. There was no light down here. No dirt, or anything that a flower would need. And then, it grew a face. And then it started talking.

"Howdy!" It said. I rubbed my eyes aggressively. I must be dreaming. Maybe this is Heaven after all. "I'm Flowey; Flowey the Flower!" It introduced itself. I laughed involuntarily.

"Haha, Flowey the Flower. Nice name, did you think of that yourself?" I don't know why I said that. It was very unlike me to be sarcastic. Maybe the fall messed with my head.

"... Yeah. Shut up! Anyway. Howdy! You're new to the Underground, aren'cha?" I shook my head.

"Am I going insane? Is this what the afterlife is really like? No way you're real. Don't tell me you're real. If you're real, I'll eat my hat." I grabbed my white cat-ears beanie from my head, combing my hair with my fingers once it was off. "I don't know if this is good food. I think it's polyester. Nevermind."

The flower - Flowey - tilted its head. "Uhh, okay? Anyway~ let's start over. Howdy!" It sounded like it was starting to get irritated. "I'm Flowey, Flowey the Flower. Nice to meet'cha!" A large green leaf erupted from the ground beneath it and reached to me. I hesitantly grabbed it and gently shook it.

"Uhh, Howdy. I'm Mason, Mason the Human. Nice to meet you, Flowey." Flowey kept speaking.

"You're new to the Underground, aren'cha?" It asked. "Don't worry, I'll help you out."

I blinked hard, seeing Flowey summon a ton of little white pellets. Magic?? But magic wasn't real!

A lot of things happened today that I thought weren't possible, so I just let it be as Flowey talked.

"Down here, we share love through... ''Friendliness Pellets.'' You want some Love, don'cha?"

"I could hear the quotation marks around ''Friendliness Pellets.'' And I'm not stupid, those are bullets." I said, pointing to the pellets. "If I try to grab those, I'll get hurt. No thanks."

"But, Love-!" I stood up and walked away from Flowey before he was able to throw the pellets at me.

"Nope, don't care." I said, attempting to climb the cave wall. "I gotta find a way outta here. My mom's probably worried sick about me."

But before I could climb far enough to even reach the nearby ledge, where I was planning to sit, I felt a sharp sting in my back.

"OW!" I exclaimed. "Alright, idiot, you wanna fight? Let's fight!" I set my hat back on and threw myself at Flowey. He stabbed me with a vine, and before I knew it, I was bleeding buckets. "Shit!"

"YOU IDIOT!!" He yelled, laughing his head off. "In this world, it's kill or BE killed!!!" I growled but was too weak to fight back. He had stabbed right through my strong arm, and I had nothing to fight with but my fists. I began to close my eyes but tried to force them open. I wouldn't let myself die, not to a flower! I was a strong kid, I just had to prove it!

Trying to prove it was what got me down here in the first place. I truly was an idiot, huh? I laughed quietly to myself, squeezing my eyes tight and clenching my good fist. No way I would die here, of all places.

Before I knew what was happening, Flowey exclaimed in fear and I heard something erupt in flames. And then, a large white furry thing knelt down to my level.

"Oh, my dear child, you're hurt so badly! What happened?!" The thing called, its big paws gently holding my injured arm and waving one over the stab wound.
