"Here you go deary, there's your timetable, reading list and locker key. Feel free to ask another pupil or teacher if you get lost" The sweet, old receptionist told me.
I mumbled a thanks and made my way to my first class. History in room 42 with Mrs Robinson, how fun. The class was easy enough to find and in no time I was in front of the door. From the outside the room seemed completely silent.
I hesitantly knocked on the door and it was roughly opened by a tall middle aged woman. She was gangly with a short brown frizzy bob and severe facial features. I subconsciously gulped due to her intimidating stare.
"You're late." She stated matter of factly, blasting morning coffee breath up my nose.
"I hate tardy children," she paused for several seconds "are you going to come inside my classroom or learn from the hallway.""s-sorry ma'am" I whispered and entered the room.
"Class, meet our new student Emily." It's Elena, not Emily. I wanted to tell her but chose instead to keep my head down.
"I expect you to treat her with kindness and make her feel welcome. Now Emily, go find an empty seat. I think there's one next to Elio." I had no idea who Elio was so I looked around the classroom searching for the empty seat.
"Today please" She snarked.
Suddenly, a boy at the back of the room raised his hand at me indicating he was Elio. I rushed to the seat next to him and slouched down in my chair. I couldn't help but notice that Elio was extremely good looking. He was very tan with sandy curls that loosely framed his face and had warm brown eyes.
"I would like to continue our work from yesterday on the chernobyll disaster. You must work with your partner and make a fact file on this topic. You will get the rest of this class to work on it and I expect it completed by Friday. Any questions?" Yeah, what the hell is chernobyll???
"No? Okay then, get started." She said, not moving her eyes from her computer screen. I glance over to Elios, waiting for him to say something, but to my surprise he is already staring at me. Quickly, I avert my eyes and start fiddling with my hoodie drawstring.
"So Emily..." I can tell he's scrambling to say something, anything, but small talk is the worst, "how are you finding the school?" He asks, obviously relieved that he thought of something to say.
After pondering his question for a while I reply with a simple "bad", hoping he'll get the message and leave me alone.
"What do you mean bad, what's wrong with it?" He obviously didn't get the message, "Well I guess it would be better if people called me the right name" I mumbled.
"Oh, what is your name?"
"Elena, Elena Smyth" I reply, hating the blandness of my last name. I mean I get that my dad couldn't have a memorable last name due to his sketchy history, but Smyth, come on."Elena, thats a really pretty name but wait-" He froze "Oh no" He said, covering his face with his hands.
"What, why are you freaking out?" I ask concerned. Does he know about my family business, great, just when I thought I might make a friend they ruin it.
