Chubby, small fingers reached for the white bells peeking through the picket fence. Karma snatched the tiny wrist.

"You can pick any flower, gem, but not these. Lily of the valley is poisonous, okay?"

"Oh..." Globs of tears welled in those round eyes.

"It's alright, you're not in trouble," Karma cooed, but the tantrum had already begun. Before she could call for backup, it arrived, hobbling with a cane to scoop up the child.

"Hey, who's my good girl?" Levi rocked her on his hip, kissing her tiny hands. The tears were long forgotten.

"Me!" She cheered with a fit of giggles, golden curls bouncing.

When that baby popped out, blonde as a sunflower, Levi had said with a teasing smirk, "She looks just like you. Thank God."

Karma never expected the former Captain of the Scout Regiment to be the fatherly type, dealing with sticky fingers and wet beds, but he stepped up, even becoming the favorite. Karma always hunted him down when the waterworks started or the vegetables were left untouched. And that giggly girl always raced straight to her Le-Le to brag about her new discoveries or display her marker-stained fingers.

He always smiled, matching her enthusiasm in a way that still managed to surprise Karma. A one-eyed, Titan War veteran letting a child paint his face with pink lipstick and neon eye-shadow? A man, who streak-checks the underside of tables and irons napkins, curling up with a pop-up book in matching PJs? It was too good to be true.

This was the life they'd made. And it was perfect.

Though, the ringing of those poisonous bells pulled Karma back into her sparkling cage. The long days spent staring at those drooping white heads and wispy curtains, contemplating her escape.

It had to be done—you'll see.

Now she saw.

All along, to secure their future, he had been protecting something far more precious than gems.

Levi nudged Karma with his elbow; those chubby arms were reaching for her. Karma nuzzled the rosy, sticky-from-syrup cheeks while the child squealed with delight.

She brushed back a golden curl and admired those round, green eyes she loved.

It felt like he was here.
