"Look who it is, my daughter!"
Sejeong saw her mum run out of the house as soon as she pulled in. Her heart swelled with happiness as she saw the familiar faces of her family waiting to greet her. She quickly got out of the car and gave her mum a hug.
"Umma, it's good to be home!"
One by one, she exchanged new year greetings with her relatives, receiving countless congratulatory messages for winning the awards last night, also complimenting her on how beautiful she looked.
The smell of food rushed through the air as she stepped through the front door. Pancakes, stews, grilled meat... she wanted everything!
"I'm so proud of you, my flower." Her mum said to her as they both took their seats at the table.
Sejeong smiled, "Thank you, umma. I am sorry though that I wasn't able to spend new year's eve with all of you."
"Don't be silly!" her mum replied, shaking her head, "We enjoyed watching you on the TV last night, and you looked so happy!"
She grinned in response, "It was a good night. Come on now, let's eat."
...
"I'm so glad I got the chance to come home, it's been a while," Sejeong said as she walked through the fields with her mum, hand in hand.
Her mum chuckled, "It's nice to have this scenery for a change, compared to how busy Seoul is. But you know what I miss when I come out here? The convenience of being able to order chicken at any time of day."
"Umma! You have chickens running around everywhere here!"
"Yeah but sometimes you want to pick up the phone and have it delivered to your door, cooked."
Sejeong laughed, "Okay, I'll make sure to bring some fried chicken next time I come home."
As they continued walking, Sejeong closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, she loved the smell of nature. She also loved being able to hear the sound of birds flying in the air, and to feel the gentle breeze against her hair. Nearby her house was a small hill, with a bench that had an unobstructed view of their home. The two of them sat in silence for a while, just enjoying each other's company. Sejeong noticed her mum was deep in thought.
"Umma, is something wrong?"'
Her mum snapped out of her daze, "Mm? Nothing, just thinking of things, that's all."
"Umma," Sejeong giggled, "what's on your mind?"
Her mum hesitated a bit before replying, "You seemed very happy last night."
Sejeong looked at her with a puzzled expression, "I know, you said that when I arrived. Did you think I wasn't?"
"No, not at all," she shook her head, "I just like seeing you like that... but I was wondering... ah never mind, you know I don't like to pry."
"Umma! You know you can ask me anything!"
"Ah yeah but," her mum looked at her, "okay then if I ask you this, you need to answer me honestly."
Sejeong replied, "Of course! Besides, I can't lie to you, you know me too well."
She smiled in response, "Yes, yes I do." so she asked, "What's going on between you and that Hyoseop?"
Sejeong's eyes widened as she turned red. How obvious must she have been for her mum to be able to see, through the television, that something was going on?
"Was it that obvious?" she asked.
Her mum shrugged, "You are my daughter, and I can read you like a book. But you weren't the giveaway, he was."
