Blood.

I stared at the once lively village with wide eyes. Men, Women and Children. All brutally massacred. Their blood and insides painted the once sugarwhite ground, in a velvet red tone. My breath hitched when I saw the corpse of a young girl, torn apart laying in the snow. Slowly I started shaking, even after all those years of it, I still get horrified by the view.
The view of bodies, ripped apart, the bitemarks, the misery.
"Kravchenko!"
At the sound of my name I snapped out of my trance. Turning around I glanced at my commander. Konstantin Zaharov.
"Yes, sir?"
He put his hand on my shoulder.
"Don't look too long, or you'll lose consciousness."
I nodded and looked away to the side. Away from his empty eyes.
Zaharov ruffled my hair and went on.
"Soldiers, we must begin searching for the first ones. We'll split up in four groups, Kravchenko, group one. Ostrovski, group two. Ivanov, group three. And I will lead group four. Let's go."
Glancing in the direction of Ostrovski I waved at him. In return he send me his signature grin and waved back.
Not wasting any more time, I lead my group to the east of the village.
The snow crunched under our boots, and colored them red. On our way we encountered many corpses.
Some of them had horrified faces.
Others peaceful or smiles.
Those most likely accepted their fate.
But, one thing concerned me.
We didn't find any members of the first group. No one.
After half an hour, one of my teammates screamed. Panicked I turned to him, and held my rifle ready.
But that was not necessary.
Because what he saw.
What I saw.
Made everyone stand still.

A pile of bodies. Squeezed together on one big pile. Their familiar faces showing pain and horrid.
Group one.
