Opening the gates

The rays of the morning sun shone through the windows. Clear blue skies were right above with white clouds hovering here and there. The cool summer breeze blew and it could be described as a wonderful day. In her previous routine, a certain young woman would have her brunches outside in her family's royal garden during days like that but unfortunately, things were no longer the same.

"Why am I holding a broom and rags?!" she shouted.

Her long gray hair was tied up into a ponytail while her green eyes were glaring at a certain someone. Even though her face had clear signs of anger with her brows furrowed and her mouth frowning, she still had her elegant beauty that could make any man think twice before further worsening her mood. It wouldn't be surprising if someone would look at her and think that she was a model no matter what she wore.

"I am Reine Pavolia, the Lady of the Peafowl! This task isn't fitting for me!" she threw the rags to the floor and wanted to beat them with her broom.

A noble like her being reduced to doing physical labor didn't sit well with her. It was already bad enough that she was wearing a plain dark green tracksuit which not only complemented her figure but was also very comfortable. If her parents would see her in an outfit like that, they would lecture her about keeping up appearances again and she would be back in her dresses made by the best tailors in their kingdom.

"Lady of the Peafowl? More like a lady of a pigsty. The least you can do is clean up when you're just freeloading here", the young man in front of her sighed.

He was wearing an orange apron over his black shirt and blue shorts while his red hair was pulled back by a white bandana. But no matter how displeased Reine acted in front of him, he didn't waver with his decision of forcing her to clean her room.

After all, her room had scattered books, food crumbs, plastic wrappers, and other trash that she didn't clean up. There was also a trash can overflowing with crumpled pieces of paper and there were empty boxes all over the floor.

"If I had my magic, then I could clean this place with a snap of my fingers!" Reine explained.

"How long are you going to keep on using that excuse?" the young man asked.

"You're merely being cocky but if the power of the spirits were here, I can blow you away to the next city!"

"You're being unreasonable."

"I am not! I can actually do many more things with my magic than simply cleaning this place. If only the spirits were here in this world and-"

"And they aren't here. What's the point of talking about that?"

Reine was about to snap back but an eerie feeling appeared in her mind when her eyes met with his. Her words wouldn't come out of her mouth and her feet became cold.

"Look where you are right now and you'll see that you're in a pigsty. You relied too much on these so-called 'spirits' to interfere with the natural principles of your world. Without them, you can't even clean your own room without acting like a spoiled brat", he said.

"T... That's..."

"Pick up those rags and start cleaning with your hands. That's the only thing you can do right now without those spirits."

He walked out of the room and closed the door. With nothing but silence and trash all over the floor, she felt something warm fall down from her eyes.

"How did things become like this?" she sobbed.

It all started a few weeks ago. Reine was the top student in her academy and was the pride of the Peacock Kingdom. A genius who was compatible with the spirits, she became hailed as the Lady of the Peafowl and was on her path to success.
