MARCUS
Looking up from where Kailey had just drifted off, Marcus made eye contact with Carson through the driver's mirror. Silent green eyes stared back, waiting to be told where they would be going. Kailey was asleep and he didn't feel comfortable waking her up to ask for her address. Telling Carson to drive to the main house, Marcus felt the car creep forward down the alley.
As they turned off into the main road, Marcus glanced at the car following them. Creed and Jason, the two other men Marcus had come to the club with, followed in the second car to ensure his safety. Marcus was infinitely more pleased with this fact now as it meant he was now in the back alone with Kailey, rather than surrounded by men.
He also trusted them with his life. Carson and Jason were paternalistic twins, similar in size and shape but slightly different in looks. Whereas Carson was often stiff-postured and the silent, overbearing type, Jason was more level-headed and calculating. Both were serious about the jobs, but Carson's character made him prone to sticking closer to Marcus than was always really necessary.
Like earlier, Marcus thought with humour. He could practically hear Carson pacing outside of the staff door while he was playing with his cute little Kailey. No doubt worried he would be attacked. And now, when Carson insisted he would be the one to drive while the other two took the separate car. It was amusing but Marcus appreciated Carson's hard work, one of the reasons he considered him his second-hand man. Jason preferred staying back and protecting from the outside, seeing things from all sides.
Creed on the other hand, was secretive, and capable of great violence when it was required, but otherwise dependable and restrained. His violent side, and his dislike for chit-chat, made him the perfect enforcer. If something went wrong, Creed was the one Marcus needed by his side to set things right.
Thinking of Creed, he remembered why he had been at the Club Indigo tonight before he had been distracted by other things. Marcus sighed. Last night, a suspected gang rival had set fire to some of the buildings across from the club. Marcus has bought the entire street several years ago for a relatively low price. Most of the buildings were abandoned and many required complete demolitions. For the past three years, Marcus had been building up the area, using the businesses as a front for his work. Club Indigo was one example of those businesses.
Though largely clean, the club had been a central location for some of his business deals, as well as a good place for members of his group to go to relax. Because it was mostly a social venture, he wasn't laundering money through the club like with many of the other businesses on the street.
The fire that had been set was irritating, probably setting his construction plans back a few months while he has the building reassessed, but nothing too troublesome. When he had heard the news this morning, he was more concerned that the police had been sniffing around. The last thing he needed was copers going around his businesses. His men knew not to phone emergency services which is why he had come down to the club to find out which idiot had done so.
He was surprised to find out that the sweet little girl sashaying around the club in that small leather skirt was the one he had been looking for. She was clearly non-the-wiser as to who he was, which meant she had no clue about club business either.
Why she had been hired was beyond him. Usually, only those in the know were allowed to work for group business but considering the club was largely separate, he assumed it didn't matter too much. He pursed his lips, it had been a few years since he had been in Club Indigo and he hadn't cared much about the general management before but he guessed he would need to check up on a few things. Especially now it seemed like someone was targeting him and his group.
