ranmaru sits absentmindedly, staring out of the classroom window as the low chatter of students starts to get tuned out of his mind.
that is, until kinashi interrupts him from fully tuning the world out.
"yo! kageyama-kun, you alright?" kinashi inquires, leaning her forearms on the front of ranmaru's desk, her torso turned around in a way that looks very uncomfortable.
"... oh, i'm alright, kinashi-chan." ranmaru mutters in response, attempting to make himself look like he wasn't just daydreaming. and honestly? he wasn't doing a very good job at it.
kinashi nods, and smiles, pulling out her phone.
"are you free this weekend?" she asks, typing something as she swings around on her chair like a kid.
ranmaru genuinely thought about it for a moment, as if he actually did have something going on. but alas, he did not.
"mm," ranmaru starts, rethinking. (you know, just in case he really wasn't free!) "... yeah, i'm free this weekend." kinashi smiles and nods her head. the conversation doesn't develop any further for a moment.
ranmaru raises an eyebrow and gives into his burning curiosity.
"why do you ask?" he swallows dryly after asking this. obviously she's gonna ask him to hang out, right?
"oh, i was wondering if you wanted to hang out with me!" kinashi beams as she puts her phone back into her pocket.
right.
over the few years they've been friends, ranmaru has grown a "talent" for reading facial expressions and body language. he couldn't tell if it was his overbearing fear of high school that forced him to pay attention to such details, or if it was the cause of kinashi's predictable gestures, that caused this sudden anxiety when meeting new people or trying new things. ranmaru decides it's just his crushing fear of school, because he doesn't want to put such a demeaning mental note on kinashi like that.
"oh, yeah sure." ranmaru bluntly replies, causing kinashi to tilt her head.
"kageyama-kun, you're not helping me out here at all," kinashi says, resting her head in her arms. "want me to invite the others?"
...
ranmaru shrugged blankly, sending kinashi into a small temper tantrum in her seat, fists flying into the air and her legs flailing as she rocked her chair. ranmaru couldn't really think of what to do in this situation. approaching the situation logically, he couldn't do anything to try and help kinashi calm down without making it a huge deal.
"kinashi-chan, calm down. i'm... sorry?..." ranmaru's voice thins out in embarrassment, his ears now feeling a little warm. he decides to shut up before he says something he'll regret.
"yeah, invite the others." ranmaru felt his presence fully slump out of discomfort. he was never the best at comforting people, in all honesty. kinashi barely bats an eye at his failed attempt at consolation and quickly returns to her natural bubbly personality.
"okay, perfect! chidouin-san and joe-kun are free too, but hirose-chan said she'll have to wait for a definite answer. how does saturday sound?" ranmaru nods his head as he listens to kinashi explain, and he blinks a few times.
