Quill paced the room nervously, twitching her wings as her partner sat in the corner.
"Quit pacing, Quill." Cuesta sighed.
"How can I?" Quill cried, flaring her wings, she sat down with a huff as she gave a worried glance towards the egg. Cuesta walked towards the large sandwing and sat down, folding her wing over Quill's back.
"It's going to be fine." Said Cuesta. She carefully twined her tail around Quill's, being mindful of the Sandwing's barb.
But what if it doesn't hatch? Thought Quill. She grabbed Cuesta's talon and squeezed it nervously, her wings twitching as she stared at the still egg. Their egg had been created via Quill's magic, so there wasn't any guarantee it would hatch. Quill tried to avoid that thought, but it kept creeping back. She sighed, reaching up and fidgeting with her earring. Cuesta rose to her feet and walked towards their egg, gently picking it up before placing it in Quill's talons. Quill held it hesitantly, frowning at the heavy egg in her talon.
"It's going to hatch. You have to stop worrying, Quill." Cuesta gave a reassuring smile, but Quill could see the hint of doubt in her ruby eyes. Quill sighed again, she did that alot. The egg was quite cold, which worried Quill more, seeing as sandwing eggs are usually warm. Suddenly, in a heartbeat, a large crack splintered along the surface of the egg, making Quill and Cuesta jump. Cuesta peered at the cracked shell, gently tapping the crack with a talon. The egg cracked again. A small claw pressed through the shell, as if the dragonet was trying to break the egg from the inside out.
"Should we help him?" Cuesta whispered.
"Perhaps. ." Responded Quill, staring intently at their egg. Cuesta gently reached towards the largest crack, tapping it repeatedly until it began to break in. The dragonet on the inside pressed its talon through the hole which had been made by Cuesta. Quill gently set the egg down as the dragonet began to fumble out of the egg, tossing shell pieces all over the hatchery floor. The small dragonet threw his wings out to the side, looking up at Quill and Cuesta. The dragonet was banana yellow, with pink-ish splatters scattered around his body. He had a deep magenta sandwing sail running down his back, but no sandwing barb. His eyes were seemingly black, but glinted red in the sunlight. Quill and Cuesta stared in awe at their new dragonet. Cuesta gently picked him up and pressed her snout to his.
"Got a name for him?" Asked Cuesta, grinning as the dragonet squeaked joyfully.
"Hm. . . perhaps. ."
