Coda was watching a battle on TV between two trainers on TV at night. It was roughly 9pm at night. Coda was just so excited to get a starter Pokémon tomorrow he was watching battles in hoping he could use what he is watching for future battles. Just then his mother walks in checking on him.
Mom: Hey there mister shouldn't you be in bed?
Coda: Sorry mom but I can't sleep I'm too excited to get my starter tomorrow.
Mom: Ok just go to bed so we can get you your starter Pokémon.
She said as Coda turned out the light and goes to bed. The next morning Coda woke up quickly getting dressed waiting for his mom to come with him. She got downstairs ready to go as they head to the Pokémon lab where they see two other trainers leave with Pokémon but then he saw Gary come out with a Pokémon as well.
Gary: Well look who's late like always.
Coda: So what Pokémon did you get?
Gary: I'll tell ya. None of your business. Besides I just got the last Pokémon gramps had so tough luck runt.
He said before walking away as Coda rushes into the lab to see if it was true.
Coda: Professor please tell me Gary lied. Please tell me you still have a Pokémon available.
Oak: Well I do have one left but it's not very friendly.
He said bringing out a Pikachu.
Oak: It's name is Pikachu. It's an electric type.
He said as Coda gently picks it up but the second he did he got shocked badly by Pikachu's thunder shock attack. He quickly dropped it and ran out the door with the Pokédex, hiding behind his mom.
Mom: What's wrong sweetie? Where's your starter?
Coda: Let's just go home mom, I'm no trainer.
He said but his mom knew something wasn't right as she calls out her Pidgeot.
Mom: Hop on we are going for a ride.
He hopped on and they flew all the way to Celadon city home of the game corner. They first stopped by the Celadon gym where a girl greeted them.
Gym trainer: May I help you two?
Mom: Yes I'm here to see my friend Erika.
A few seconds later Erika came out.
Erika: Hey Hope, what brings you here?
She asked as Hope explained the situation to Erika who then looks at Coda.
Erika: Poor buddy come give Auntie Eri a hug.
She said opening her arms as Coda hugs her tight.
Erika: Let's go to the game corner I hear they have a special prize today.
She said taking us to the game corner where in order to win the special prize you had to go to the black slot machine next to the front counter and get three sevens in a row. We then start our attempts at the machine but after a few minutes of trying it started to get hopeless since we weren't doing so well on the machine.
Coda: Mom should we stop? I don't think we can do it. I'm fine waiting another year for a Pokémon.
Mom: Let's give it one last try. Everyone put your hands on the lever.
She said as her, Erika and Coda put their hands on the machine and pull down at the exact same time. The slots start spinning as the three stare at it intensely. It eventually stops and lands on the jackpot as an alarm on the machine goes off signaling there was a winner. The employee looked shocked and walks into the back for a second.
Grunt: Sir someone won the jackpot on the super rigged slot machine with the rare prize. What should I do?
???: Give them their reward so we don't risk exposing ourselves.
Grunt: Yes sir.
He said coming out with a Pokéball.
Grunt: Congratulations, here is your prize.
He said handing Coda's mom the Pokéball before handing it to me. He let the Pokémon out of its ball revealing an oddly colored Dratini. He pulls out my Pokédex to learn about it.
Pokédex: Dratini, the dragon Pokémon. Even the young are known to exceed 6' 6". It is rare and was long considered to exist only in myth.
We then left as he reaches his hand out to pet it only for it to flinch and move its head back.
Erika: She must be shy, poor girl.
Coda: How can you tell the gender?
Erika: A woman can tell these things. You'll learn when you're older.
He nods and decided to give dratini a piece of his lunch hoping she would trust him a bit more. Luckily the dratini ate the food which seemed to calm her down a bit. The Dratini then slithers up his arm and lays around his neck starting to rest.
Mom: Hey Erika, may I ask you something in private?
Erika: Sure thing, Hope. Stay here Coda
She said as Coda was just watching Dratini nap as Erika followed Hope a bit.
Mom: I know I'm about to ask a lot but can you please travel with Coda so I can be assured he is safe?
Erika: I'm guessing it's also because of his condition?
Mom: A bit but yeah.
Erika: I'm guessing he still doesn't know about it?
Mom: Well it's kinda hard to explain to a ten year old without making them feel bad. Please don't tell him yet.
Erika: I'm not going to tell him but you'll have to eventually otherwise he may lose his trust in you. But I will travel with him.
Mom: Thank you and I promise I will tell him in the near future.
She said as they return over to Coda who was gently petting Dratini behind her ear fin things. Erika and Hope sit down looking at him.
Mom: Coda, how would you like Auntie Eri to travel with you across Kanto?
Coda: Are you kidding? I'd love Auntie Eri to come! She's so cool, fun and honest just like you mom.
He said as Hope chuckles at the last part knowing she wasn't completely honest with him. Coda and his mom then spent the rest of the day in Celadon, staying the night with Erika. Coda was sleeping on an air mattress hugging Dratini in his sleep excited to truly start his journey tomorrow.
