Far Off in the Distance

Finding Someone

My whole day at school is a whirlwind of embarrassment, stupidity, and laughter. All I can hear every time I stop at my locker to drop off some books are giggles and out of the corner of my eye I can see pointing fingers.

Finally the bell rings for lunch and I walk out of math class, ready to have some peace and alone time to myself. But as I walk out of the classroom I look up and see a well-built guy coming up to me. I don't know what he is doing, but he has an intense look on his face and his eyes are locked directly on me. I try swerving and going down a corridor to my left, but the boy gets to me first.
"Hey newbie," he says with a grin on his face. And with a flick of his hand my books and papers and binders are scattered around the math room entrance. All the students coming out are stepping all over my homework and notes. My eyes start to burn with tears and my vision becomes a blur. As I pick up the paper with footprints planted on them, a hand reaches down and starts to help me. I look up and see a gorgeous boy, with chocolate hair, deep, mysterious eyes, and a warm smile that just makes me melt.
"Hey, I'm Chad. God, what happened to you?"
"Uh-uh," I can't find my words. "Some jerk just came and pushed everything out of my hands." I try my best to blink back the tears and not show him how weak I am, even though I probably look like a wreck.
"Hey why don't you come sit with me today?" He asks with a teeth-showing smile that sends a shock through my whole body.
"Sure," I say awkwardly, "but where are all your friends?"
"Oh, I wasn't supposed to tell anyone but...their ditching today. I was gonna go with them but I needed to get my science grade up... Eeeek!"
I giggle at his story, and all the while I can't help but long to meet his other friends. To see what kind of people they are, what they are like, I can't wait for the chance to finally belong.
