BENJAMIN'S POV

Thunder rumbling. Heavy rain that cause the window to make a loud thud whenever the rain's water splashes to it. I hate rain– or I might say, I hate the memory beyond the word rain. It simply reminds me how awful my past is.

"Ben. Why're you still awake?" Maia asked from behind, she interrupted my broken thoughts with her question. "You can't sleep, don't you?" She added as I kept my mouth shut, didn't even bother to look at her.

"This rain gives me anxiety. You know how much I hated rains, right, sister?" I saw her worried face. She doesn't change, she just grew up and she reminds me of our mother. With her blue oceanic eyes, brown curly hair– shoulder length, fair skin and curvy yet sturdy physique, tough-enough-looking.

She crossed her arms and sat at the edge of my bed, "Yes, I know. I know you better than you know your self, Ben." It sounded like she's mocking me. Well I couldn't blame her nor complain. She's older than me, for like.. 2 minutes, I guess. And yes, your thoughts were right, we're twins.

Maia is my twin sister. Sometimes I'm asking myself, what did I do right on my previous life to give me such a blessing in disguise on this present life. Blessing in disguise, I refer to Maia. She's indeed a blessing to me. And I wanted to protect her at any cost. Ever since our parents are nowhere to be found, I promised to myself that I will never lose her. Maia is the the only family I have— well that was before. Because now, I got a new family. WE both got a new family. A big family, if you may ask. But we promised that we'll never forget where we came from.

"Yeah, I know, I know. You don't have to say that always when we're talking. You're being redundant, you know that?", I said to her, yielding. I sat on the other edge of the bed, looking at her and I can sense that she got something to spill. "What is it? Tell me now before I snooze out."

She just give me a sigh as an answered. Wow. That's a big revelation. "I'm just.. uhhh, I'm just tired. With all of this stuff. I'm so sick to move like a walking mannequin, Ben. You're pretty lucky, you know. I'd rather go to school and drown myself to study all night long instead of walking on our hallway with three books above my head that I'll have to make sure not to let it fall." And now that's the big revelation. I didn't know that Maia actually ranting this kind of stuff to me. I mean, I thought she's enjoying it. Maybe I wasn't focusing that much on my surrounding— not even on my self. Because there's this thing that keeps on bothering my individuality. Maia is right.. I don't even know myself.

"There's nothing we can do about that. You know that, Ma. And besides, you seems to enjoying it. Maybe you're just physically tired and all you need right now is to rest. It's time for you to call it a night." I told her and crawled near her, sitting beside her. "We can do this. Let's make Mother and Father proud." I held her hand and slightly squeeze it, wanting to make her feel that I'm sincere on what I've said.

Maia nodded as a respond and gave me a squeeze back on my hand. Finally I saw my sister's smile. "Thank you, Ben." She maybe look like a hard-nut-shell but she's way too fragile than those glasses or mirrors. The word 'handle with care' is definitely made for her, only for her.

"You're very much welcome, young lady." I answered, earning a soft chuckle from her while shaking her head and finally get up.

"Young lady, hu? You sounded like Butler Baronn right now, Ben. But anyway, matutulog na ako, my baby brother." She said while caressing my cheeks. I groaned as soon as I heard the word 'baby' which resulted a burst laughter from her.

"I hope you have a worst nightmare, baby sister." I mocked at her and finally yield as I laugh as well.

I felt alone once again as soon as Maia shut the door. Hindi ko alam kung bakit ko pa napapanaginipan yung masasamang nangyari saamin bago pa kami napunta kung nasaan man kami ngayon. I can still feel their presence. The way they treated us like an animal. Kung gaano kasakit ang bawat pagpasok ng malalaking karayom sa balat na mistulang bumabaon sa kaibuturan ng pagkatao namin. I closed my eyes and tried not to think of our tragic past too much. Makalipas nga ang ilang sandali, naisipan kong matulog na at alam kong panibagong pagsubok ulit ang kakaharapin ko bukas.
