(Y/n)'s pov
It was finally fall break and I now had a whole week to myself. I planned to change my clothes and stay out longer than usual. Being inside wasn't going to get me to socialize. I hadn't explored the town at night yet and this time Mayor Waite told me that there was going to be a festival! This was the number one thing on my list as I saved up money for it from helping the elders with easy stuff. The night was going to be cold so I put on my favorite sweater with dark blue jeans, my sneakers on, just in case I had to run, and took my backpack, just this time, I emptied my homework and such on the bed.
When I got there, I realized how early I was as they were still setting up the place. Mayor Waite saw me and she waved before talking to that white haired guy I saw in the cafe all the time. He was young, yet dressed like he was on the way to being a Godfather. Nonetheless, looking at him was enjoyable. Too enjoyable that I didn't realize Mayor Waite was walking towards me. She smiled at me like we had been friends forever.
"(Y/n), you seem tall enough. Can you help Steven hang up some stuff?"
"Who's Steven?" She pointed at the man she was previously talking to and gestured for him to come over.
"This is Steven," Mayor Waite wrapped her arms around him in a way that you would do to embarrass your friends. I assumed it worked as he glared at her menacingly. "I'm sure you've seen him in the cafe." Me and him looked at each other before I glanced back and forth between them.
"Are you guys siblings?" She laughed it off and he just smiled at me. His eyes were a beautiful brown that reminded me of a bakery for some reason.
"We're childhood friends, so you could say we're siblings."
"That's nice. I'm (Y/n) by the way. It's nice to meet you."
He pried Mayor Waite's arms off of him before we shook hands.
"It's nice to be introduced to you, (Y/n)." How proper... It made me curious
"If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?"
"I'm 20." He answered a little too fast. But at the same time, he's probably tired of people saying he looks an hour into retirement. Either way, it took me by surprise.
"20!?"
"And how old are you? 14?"
"I'm 18..." Mayor Waite chuckled. Apparently, he's got jokes.
"Could you two hurry up? Festival starts at 7." She smiled big and slowly walked away. I looked back at him before he just started walking, expecting me to follow, which I did, and we ended up at some banners laying down. Then he went to grab two ladders.
We both hung up one side at a time, slowly moving down to space them out. I was so tempted to talk to him, I had a friend crush. So many different possibilities went through my head as he was focusing on hanging the banners.
"So, Steven..." Stupid. So stupid.
He looked at me as a response. I quickly looked back at what I was working on.
"Have you ever seen Slenderman?" My eyebrows were slightly raised in anticipation. He visibly seemed less interested now that Mayor Waite was gone, kinda made me panic.
"I don't believe in that type of stuff." Liar.
"Really? Seems to be a popular topic around here."
"Just stories, I guess. They're fun to listen to, but at the same time people want something to believe in. Also wanting to get closer to little girls like you, who believe in him." Woah.
That made me question things. He chuckled at the look on my face and jumped down from the ladder.
"Wait!" I tried climbing down but got my foot stuck and tripped. My life flashed before my eyes and I have never felt my chest pump this much blood.
Fortunately but unfortunately, Steven caught me. I shivered and opened my eyes, him smiling down at me. I was so embarrassed, and he put me down as I made effort to move.
"Thank you..." I tried avoiding eye contact and looked around for something to. He hummed and went to grab another banner.
"Are you gonna help me with this one or not take your chances and do something else?" With the amount of attitude in his voice, I knew he was amused. I grabbed one side and slid my ladder a couple of feet down the road.
After all of that, I got some food and watched others roam around. Steven came up to me but did nothing. Just watched the people with me. I looked up at him and back at the crowd. But he laughed under his breath, which caused me to face him again.
"What's so funny?" He turned away and covered his mouth momentarily.
"Nothing. I promise." He sniffled and I bent forward a bit to look at him. He was turning pink.
"I almost died and you're laughing at me..."
"That's not what's funny, I promise."
"Then what's so hilarious? I want to laugh, too." He turned to me and I stood up straight as he squinted his eyes at me.
"Your eyes are shaking." My face went blank and he smiled. "I'm just messing with you. I can tell you're still scared, though."
"... Wanna play a game?" I stuffed the last piece of food I had in my mouth and dusted my hands. He rolled his eyes and did the same.
"Which one?"
"Mmm," I looked around and smiled. "Ring toss?"
He looked at the game and back at me before nodding, taking my trash in the process. My smile grew bigger as we walked over to the game.
We both got 6 rings each but made none of them. So I bought more and only made one. He watched as I jumped up and down celebrating, not understanding why I'm so happy until I got handed the ugliest stuffed bear I have ever seen. But it was what I wanted all along. It was a good two feet tall and fit in my arm like a toddler.
"Loser," I teased. He glared at me I giggled.
"And you cheated. You bought more rings."
"I still won something. Unlike you." He scoffed, hopefully jokingly, and walked away. I followed behind and he let me catch up to him, us enjoying the event for the rest of the night. Really, we messed around all night, but laughing around and being a nuisance made me feel right at home with him.
