Prologue: Eternities' End

Embraced by a pool of red overflowing,
Her marble reflection rests unmoving,
Hands around her throat,
Again and again and again,
Ad infinitum.
Broken circuits, hollow socket,
Again and again and again,
Ad infinitum.

Elster's POV

Her bright red eyes stared into mine as she pulled back from a kiss, "I missed you..."

"I missed you too," I replied.

"Ah," she perked up, looking a little excited, "it's our 3000 cycle anniversary... we'll be getting the updated mission parameters later so I thought it'd be nice to celebrate. Wait," she paused for a second to think, "let me put on some music."

She pulled me along, still holding my hand and I followed matching my pace with her's.

As she put the disc in, I set my hat on a nearby stand.

A slightly melancholy song filled the air. I doubt it was... legal. It probably wasn't, probably something Ariane had stashed away without the knowledge of the higher ups.

I had personally never heard the song before, but it was enjoyable...

She held one of her hands and I put mine in it. She held it out while placing the other hand on my shoulder.

I put my free hand on her waist in response just like in the movies she'd shown me.

And so, we danced.

We danced for as long as our legs would let us... Ariane was eventually too tired to continue and so we sat down on her bed and talked until she drifted off to sleep.

Her head leaned over to me and landed on my shoulder. I contemplated adjusting my position so as to allow me to lay her down properly on the bed, but I decided to leave her be.

I assumed she would find this... comforting.

I wrapped my hands around her,
Under the watch of the Red Eye. 
The cycle is finally broken,
My promise kept.
I wrapped my arms around her,
Under the watch of the Blue Eye.

I woke up sitting on the floor, next to Ariane who was sleeping peacefully on the bed.

"Good Morning, sleepyhead" I said, getting up and kissing her on the forehead as she stirred and opened her eyes.

The bright red of her eyes matched the red sheets of the bed and made her marble white hair and pale skin stand out even more.

"You slept here again, didn't you?" She asked back sleepily, pointing at the spot where I had just been sleeping, "I told you to sleep in the next room. I don't want you to fall sick too, you know... and you're gonna be sore all over if you keep sleeping on the floor..."

"Alright, alright, maybe tonight," I conceded, "but you're condition has been getting worse by the day-"

"It'll be fine," she interrupted, "Everything will work out in the end."

"But-" I tried to complain but this time, my stomach growled to interrupt me.

"Well then, let's get some breakfast ready. You have work to do today, don't you, Elster?"

I sighed. As much as I wished to stay at her side during this illness, I still needed to go to work today.

She always gets her way in the end... not that I'm complaining.
