Growing up, I’ve always been told stories about haunted schools, but now that I’m standing in front of it, it’s completely different. All of my fear came rushing in, and my heart was beating a million miles per hour. I couldn’t be afraid. I just couldn’t. I’ve never felt this feeling before; to be so afraid I practically can’t breathe. We had to figure it out, though. We needed to know,

“Are we going in there?”

Anya whispered slightly, trembling in fear. I gulped and slowly but steadily, I opened the door and we walked through the double wooden doors.

The air was cold and crisp as if there was something in this school. As I stood at the front door, I could feel a shiver down my spine.

“There’s something in this place.”

I pulled out a flashlight from my bag to light the way, as it was completely dark.

“We're gonna die, aren’t we?”

I put my hand on her arm, trying to comfort her, as much as possible.

“We’re gonna be fine, I promise.”

I turned on my flashlight and began picking up books from the shelves and throwing them , trying to find anything.

One book, after another.

“What are you looking for specifically?”

Anya asked me as she walked next to me, and held the flashlight for me.

“I don’t know. Clues? A secret entrance? Anything that could help us find answers”. Anya and I have been friends since grade school. I was the new kid, and Anya Grover was the first person to talk to me. I felt like such an outcast like I didn’t belong. She changed all of that; no one understands me as she does.

After throwing around all but one book, and not finding anything, I sighed. As I put my hand on the last book, I prayed before taking it down. A mechanical noise started to play, whirring as the bookshelf began to open leading to a secret staircase.

“Bingo”

I smiled at Anya

“Ladies first.”

She looked at me with fear on her face.

“Fine.”

She handed the flashlight to me and began to walk down the stairwell, leading to god knows where. I entered the stairwell and pulled the shelf shut from behind me.

The stairs seemed like they went on forever, as we walked down them. With each step we took, it got darker and darker.

It was practically an endless staircase. I sighed a sigh of relief as we finally reached the last and finally stair, a rush of cold air flew right through me,

“Did you feel that?”

I peered over at Anya finishing her final step,

“Feel what?”

She questioned obliviously, my flashlight flickered causing Anyaa to let out a shriek.

“Chandre I don’t think we should be down here”

Thud.

A giant crash was sounded from the wall causing Anya to grab onto me tightly,

“Anya, my arm”

I began to scold her,

“Sorry, It scared me”

I faced the flashlight towards the spot the thud came from, the painting that was once on the wall, now laid on the floor, the back side was facing upwards.
