Shane was driving back toward camp, the truck bouncing slightly on the uneven road, the back filled with precious water. As he approached, he called out to everyone, "Water's here, y'all. Just a reminder to boil before use." His voice was calm, almost mechanical, but it carried the weight of responsibility.

Rick and Lori were still digging nearby, working in the dirt under the hot sun. The tension between them was thick. Lori glanced over at Shane, frustrated. "Are you asking me or telling me?" she shot back, her voice sharp with exhaustion.

Shane, not missing a beat, replied, "Asking."

Lori gritted her teeth, hands on her hips as she glared at the ground for a moment, then turned back to Rick. The unease in her was palpable, her voice raising in anger. "I think it's crazy. I think it is just the stupidest way to break your son..." She trailed off, her words hanging in the air as she glanced at Rick, who was focused on the task at hand.

But before they could continue, a sudden scream pierced the air.

Carl's voice broke through the tension. "Mom!" The sound was full of panic, and the sharpness of it sent a chill through the camp.

Valerie's voice followed immediately, "Dad!" Her tone was equally terrified, as she ran toward the source of the scream.

Lori's heart raced. "Carl?" she yelled, her voice cracking.

Shane was already moving, sprinting towards the sound without a second thought. "Bean?" he called out, desperation clear in his voice.

Everyone around them started to react, racing toward the noise. "Over there!" someone shouted, pointing into the woods. The urgency was clear in their voices.

Rick was already on his feet, grabbing a nearby pole, ready to protect. "Stay close!" he barked at Lori, then took off toward Carl's scream, Shane right behind him.

The panic in the air was thick. "Carl!" Lori screamed, rushing to find her son.

"Mom!" Carl's voice was a relief in itself, but it was laced with fear. He was alive, but something had happened.

Shane, having caught up to Valerie, pulled her into a tight hug. He was trying to reassure her, though he was shaken himself.

Lori ran toward Carl, nearly collapsing to the ground as she pulled him into a fierce hug. "Carl! Baby!" she exclaimed, relief flooding through her.

Carl, still breathless from fear, clung to her tightly. "Mom!" His voice broke as he wrapped his arms around her.

Rick, who had been running at full speed, finally caught up to them. He dropped to one knee beside Carl, looking him over with concern. His voice, full of fatherly concern, was steady as he asked, "You okay?"

Carl nodded quickly, his breath still ragged. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just scared."

Shane, standing nearby, turned to Valerie. He hugged her tightly, keeping her close. "You okay?" he asked softly.

Lori looked at both kids, then turned her gaze to Rick, her voice still shaky. "I've got him," she said, holding Carl close. "Nothing bit you or scratched you, right?" she added, scanning Carl's body for any sign of injury.
