As I drive up this familiar bumpy road I take a look at the sky. It has just barely turned 8 in the morning and the sky is still dark and mysterious. The overshadowing, grim, grey clouds above me begin to sprinkle small droplets of rain onto my windshield. I look to my left only to see a grey blanket of fog starting to form and a forest of trees. I continue looking forward as the blanket of fog thickens until all I am able to see is the silhouettes of tall and obscured trees. I quickly sneak a peak to my right when I turn on the continuously curvy bumpy road. I knew that if I were to look out the window I would see the same view I saw out my left but I wasn't trying to look outside.
My best friend Brett sat in the passenger seat next to me. His brown hair that reminded me of autumn leaves was nicely brushed out of his golden hazel eyes. He wore a plain black t-shirt and a black hoodie over. He was wearing new blue jeans and new black Converse that he had said he bought last week. He sat up straight with one hand gripping tightly into the top car handle and his other hand planted on his knee gripping onto his jeans.
We both got carsick easily but I was better at controlling it and I was the better driver. He looked pale and kept closing his eyes while taking slow deep breaths.
"Hey we're almost there just hang in there." I say as I slowly turn yet another corner up this mountain.
We were headed to a lake in these mountains that we always went to every year. This will be our last year before we head to college. We have gone to this lake every year since we were in second grade...that's when we met.
I had just moved schools and I was getting bullied yet again. I was only 7 but they didn't care. I was pushed to the floor, my lunch would get stolen, or they would call me names. One day my bullies came up to me and I remember thinking that they looked like giants towering over me. The tallest one was about to smack me when someone stepped in front of me. It was a boy with scruffy brown hair and seemed to be my age. I soon realized he was one of the boys in my class. I had never talked to him though. I usually avoided people for my sake. All I remember was him yelling at the other kids to buzz off then he turned, smiled at me, and said that I was safe as long I as stuck by him. Everyday he took all the hits for me and eventually my bullies gave up on trying to get to me so they left me and him alone.
I looked at Brett out of the corner of my eye to see him just looking at me. He didn't say anything at first he only studied my face. Oh gosh . I always feel awkward when people are staring at me. I wonder what he was thinking. When he finally turned back around he spoke in a much softer and quieter version of his smoky smooth voice...carsick.
"Pull over."
Oh my gosh. Was he going to throw up? No no no not in my car. I quickly pulled over to a large pull-out and parked. I looked over at him as he opened the car door and stepped out.
"Now get out." He said as he shut his door and slowly walk around the front of my car. I'm confused I thought he was nauseous that is why I hurried. I cautiously stepped out of my car as Brett walked around to where I was now standing. I shut the car door, leaned against my car, and looked up at him.
Brett looked more relaxed now that he was outside. He was a couple inches taller than me and even more with me leaning on the car. He was looking down at me then he took a deep breath and started scanning his surroundings.
It was lightly raining and the fog was still thick around us. There was some wind and because of it it made my body shiver and my long brunette hair whip in front of my face making it hard to see. I wish Brett would do what he wanted to do quick because I forgot to bring my jacket. I was getting goose bumps and my teeth were chattering. I stared down at my wet grey boots.
"Are you cold Jade?" I slowly looked up to see him staring at me attentively.
"No."
"You're such a bad liar."
"As if it wasn't already obvious," I rolled my eyes." Yes I'm cold. I wouldn't be though if you had not randomly wanted to get out of the car and drag me along. I thought you were nauseous..."
"I just needed fresh air," he smirked. " I thought you would like some too. You didn't look good either."
"Well I'm fine and if you don't mind I'm going back in." I leaned back up, turned around, and only opened my car door a couple inches before I felt Brett push it shut again. He was standing right behind me and I could feel warm exhales of his breath on my neck. It felt like such an awkward position. His arm was above my head still on my car door. I slowly turned around and faced him. He was staring straight into my eyes and looked like he wanted to say something. What is he doing? I suddenly felt my cheeks grow hot. Then he
