They didn't expect it. Why would they? For years on end the people of Remlia had been under the protection of the princess.
The princess had magical power far greater than even the likes of the king. Evil was such a rare sight in Remlia that everyone had let they're guard down. They had laid aside their axes spears and swords in exchange for parties and brandy.
But they where foolish and naive. When the shadow of war did fall upon them the great warriors of old were reduced to nothing more than drunken bastards. Few could pick up a weapon and even fewer could use one.
But even still they put up a great fight. Sword clashed against sword and shield against shield. But they where doomed to fail And yet with the help of the princess they pushed back The demons that threatened their city.
The death toll was uncountable. Thousands where killed in the battle. Homes where burned it the ground. But this was only the first of many battles to come. The king more than anyone new this so he immediately started to retrain the warriors of old and the warriors of new. This time they were prepared. But it still wasn't enough.
More homes smoldered as they burned and many more died. A reanimated corpse killed ten men with a single slash of his blade. A blob crawled around on the ground absorbing anything in its wake.
Then suddenly a road erupted from the sky and a terrifying creature that looked like a cross between a bird and a lion swopped down on its mighty wings aiming for the princess and her servant.
It grabbed the princess carefully around the waist and flew away. The king was left shocked but try as he might he could not shoot the thing as it flew faster still to the boarders of Remlia.
The king noticed just to late that he was surrounded. He cut through his opponents like butter but was quickly overwhelmed. He now lay bedridden. Soon the battle was over they had won once again. But without the princess and the king in critical condition the people of Remlia feared the next battle would be there last.
The king called for his daughters servant. She was a fairy named cutie. She herself was a powerful magician but she worked with healing more than offence.
"King I heard you had called for me" cutie said as she flew into the room.
"We will not win this war without help" the king stated "you must bring here another warrior.
"But who else is there?" cutie asked "we all ready have the elves with us as well as the dwarves and even my own people have come to your aid."
"In the forest there is a shrine. and inscribed upon it there is a sentence. It says 'to bring a hero' many times my most trusted wise men have looked at it and the wizard Thorndog came to see it." the king answered.
"How does it work." cutie said in amazement.
"To activate it you would need to put  large amounts of mana into the area and it will choose a hero from another world another universe even." The king said.
" but sir why am I being told of such a great relic." Cutie asked bewildered.
"As you know the princess has been kidnapped and I am bedridden you are the next person with the most mana in the city you must bring us a hero before it is to late." The king said.
Cutie was suddenly quite overwhelmed but she new he was right.
"Of course my king I shall bring you a hero." and with that she flew off to the forest to find the relic.
