Kirsten waited for the bus in the drizzling rain. It had been raining quite a bit lately. Kirsten hated rain. Especially when there mud and wet dirt on the ground, and it gets all over your shoes.
Kirsten wished the bus could come faster. Then, as if the gods had heard her wish, the bus came round the corner to her stop. She climbed the stairs and walked down the wet aisle, Sitting in a two seater all alone.
The bus arrived at school. Kirsten walked in, silent. She practically felt everyone's eyes on her. She pulled her black hood up, covering her face. She didn't give a fuck about any of the students. She didn't give a fuck about anyone.
You would know if you were locked in your room most of the time as a kid.
Now, Kirsten's parents were almost never home. Kirsten's mom was mainly out getting drunk with all her friends. To forget about Kirsten's father's infidelity. Her father had been cheating on another woman for quite some time. Kirsten's mother knew, but never said anything.
"It's probably all the alcohol." Kirsten thought. But Kirsten had her own problems. She has a smoking problem. A problem so bad she feels like she can't live without puffing on a cigarette.
Kirsten got to class rather early, so she just sat at her desk. Slowly, kids started to come into class one at a time. Matthew Yusef, Giovanni White, Lola's squad...
And then a girl came in. She wasn't a girl Kirsten had ever seen before. She was a girl with tangled black hair and frizzy ends. She looked like a girl who never cared about what anyone thought about her. Not like Kirsten.
Mrs. Jordan came in, her blouse neat as always.
"Alright, Class," Mrs. Jordan said, glancing at the girl with black hair. "We have a new student. Her name is Lise, and she just moved her from London. I want you all to give her a warm welcome!" She looked at Lise again, as if to tell her to come up to the class. As if Lise knew, she stumbled up to the front of the classroom.
"Hi, my name is Lise Becklee. I used to live in London, an' now I live here!" She said, with a light British accent. The class looked up at Lise, as if they had expected her to speak more. Lise just stood there, her hands behind her back.
"Well, is there anything you like to do. Y'know, like hobbies?" Mrs. Jordan asked. Lise perked up, as if she had just won the lottery.
"Oh yea! I LOVE to draw. I have my own sketchbook an' everythin'..." Lise rambled on. Kirsten didn't really care. Well, she might have smiled a BIT when Lise mentioned drawing. Oh, she loved to draw. Secretly, though.
"An' I like to watch cartoons, but my fav cartoon is prob' My Little Pony..." Lise continued on. "Cartoons?" Lola whispered to Roxanne. "Who watches cartoons anymore? And in high school?"
"I know, right." Roxanne whispered back. "So dorky." Lise seemed to hear what they said, but continued to ramble.
"An' yea! That's basically everything abou' me!" Lise said, still cheerfully. 'Well, we are very glad to have you here, Lise." Mrs. Jordan said. "Why don't you sit next to.. hmm..."
"Kirsten!" Well, great. Now she had the slightly annoying new girl next to her. Lise took her seat at the desk. She turned to Kirsten and smiled. "Hi! I like your hoodie!" Lise said. "Thanks.." Kirsten muttered.
Around 4 hours had passed since school started. The bell for lunch was about to ring any second now. A few more minutes passed before the bell rang. Everyone jumped up from their seats and ran to their lockers. Kirsten walked slowly to her locker.
224, 223... Ah, her locker, number 222. She entered her code and yanked the door open. She shoved her history book in her locker and took her money from the pocket in her backpack. She walked to the lunchroom and waited in line at the counter where they serve the school lunch. She got her tray and sat down. She looked at her lunch, the same crappy cheese sandwich that had no flavor and the salad that was made of lettuce and tomato's, that's it. She sighed and took a seat next to Cece, her best friend since third grade.
"It feels like they serve us the exact same food every single day, hmm?" Cece said.
"Uh, yeah, I know, right?" Kirsten said. Suddenly, Kirsten felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around to see Lise, who smiled right in her face.
"Um.. Hi! Can I sit here?" Lise asked. "Oh! um... I.." Kirsten looked at Cece, who was nodding her head. "Uh.. sure."
"Thanks!" Lise sat down and took slice of pizza that had been wrapped in foil out. She took a bite of her pizza and chewed for a moment, before opening her mouth to speak. "Oh! I though I recognize you! Aren't you the hoodie girl from homeroom?"
"Um.. Yeah. Lise, right?" Kirsten asked.
"Yup! That's me! And, you are..." Lise said, waiting for an answer.
"Oh! I-I'm Kirsten." She said. "And this is my friend, Cece." Cece nodded next to her. Lise began talking to Cece. As she was doing so, Kirsten glanced over to the table where Lola's squad sat. Everyone knew Lola, Roxanne, Maria, Taffida, and Sianna were some of the coolest kids in the high school. Everyone wanted to be their friends (Well, except Kirsten and Cece. Maybe Lise, too), But they though everyone besides each other are losers and dorks. Occasionally, Lola told some kind of joke, or story, and the whole group exploded into laughter and giggles.
Sometimes, Kirsten wished that were her.
The most popular girl in the school, making jokes and laughing with a big group of friends.
No one would think she had any flaws at all. She was absolutely perfect.
The thoughts were too much to handle. She felt like she was about to cry. She just wanted to be perfect! WHY WASN'T SHE GOOD ENOUGH?!
"Kirsten!?" A voice called out to her in worry, and a hand touched her shoulder. It was Lise and Cece. "Are you okay?!" Lise asked.
"I-I'm fine!" Kirsten said, shakily. "I'm fine.."
"You're not fine, but you're too scared to let anyone know your true feeling." A voice in her head said. "Pathetic."
Lise shrugged her shoulders. "Okay." Suddenly the bell rang, making Kirsten jump. Lunch was over.
"Sooo... I'll see you later?" Lise asked Kirsten and Cece with a smile.
"Yeah.." Kirsten said, nodding her head. "Later."
Lise nodded and walked out of the classroom with her lunchbox. "Come on, or we're gonna be late." Cece said.
"Okay." Kirsten said. Cece and her walked out of the lunchroom, wondering about Lise.
