My mother payed her respects and an hour after police showed up she left.
The hospital was quiet. And not to mention boring.
I couldn't wait to get out of here. I didn't have long until I'd go but I wanted time to speed up.
I managed to find a film channel on the TV, playing nothing but romancing the stone and crocodile Dundee.
___________________________Time passed a little faster than usual. It was almost sundown and I could hear the nurses doing their last checkups.
"Is everything ok miss Chandler?" The nurse asks.
"Super" I smile.
"Anything you need?" She asked.
"Nothing, thanks" I reply.
She gives a small nod before closing the door.
___________________________I was waiting for a rattle of the door knob, footsteps or the opening of the window.
But nothing.
Not a sound apart from the low buzz of the air conditioning and the quiet shifting of files down the hall.
Maybe he was caught last time.
Maybe he couldn't take the risk of visiting me again.
Perhaps he was gone.
___________________________The moment I drifted off, I felt myself sink deeper into a dream.
My mind cleared through the Fog, and all of a sudden I was right back where I started.
In the damp forest of the island.
I walked the path in the trees.
Felt the roots beneath my feet.
Listened to the eerie silence that lingered.
When I awoke from the door opening.
"Good morning miss Chandler, last day, last breakfast". The nurse smiled.
"I've brought you something special".
"Eggs, toast, bacon, tomatoes, and coffee".
"A true British fry up". I laugh.
"Well, besides from there not being beans , hash browns, and black pudding". She replied.
"Well, it's great, thanks". I say.
"Enjoy". She closes the door.
I eat what I can, and place the leftover food on top of the bedside table.
Slowly I raise my legs up and with a slight ache I place my feet onto the cold blue surface.
It felt like I hadn't felt the ground for years, though it was only days.
I pushed myself up and my legs almost failed.
Pins and needles shot through them as I took one step at a time.
I stretched and twisted my body both ways, allowing my joints to click whatever uncomfort was in them.
There on the armchair was a bag of stuff my mother had left for me.
I unzipped the bag and dug through the piles of clothes inside.
A navy turtle neck, and low rise boot cuts. Perfect.
A knock came upon the door, and a voice on the other side.
"Your mother is outside for you, would you like help with your bags?". The nurse asked.
"I'm fine with them, thanks". I reminded.
____________________________When I got to the bottom of the staircase and out through the double doors, my mother greeted me with a smile. A taxi was waiting for me.
"How do you feel?". She asked pressing a kiss to my cheek.
"All better". I reply.
Then it clicked to me, I had left my wedding ring on the bedside table in the hospital room.
"I gotta go back, I left something important behind".
"Ok, sure, don't be long". She called.
I was about to go in, but my arm was grasped and I was pulled swiftly around the side of the hospital where nobody was around.
My back was pushed against the brick wall and I looked up at the blur infront of me.
"Michael!?".
His face looked tired and worn.
And his forehead was covered with a thin sheen of sweat, like he had been running.
"Shhh!, look, I know you might be questioning everything that's happened and that's happening right now. But I need you to answer truthfully". He spoke ,panting.
"What are you talking about, what's going on?". I ask.
"Please Lex!".
I hesitate, but nod.
"Do the cops know what happened?".
"Yeah".
"Have you told them about David".
"Yeah".
"Ok, what about the fight?".
"Everything".
"Everything?".
"Yes, Michael".
"What do you mean everything, did you tell them about me?".
"No, I only said that David and me got into a fight and he stabbed me, I never said anything about you".
He let out a relieved sigh.
"Why?, why are you so concerned about them?". I ask.
"What happened after I blacked out at the island?".
He lifted his weary head, his eyes kept back a secret. A dark secret, that had to be unlocked.
"Lex-".
"Tell me, Michael".
"I cant-".
"If you don't answer me, I will tell them about you".
"Just, please don't flip, ok?".
The nerves built up inside of me, tension was rising.
Higher
Higher
Higher
"I....I killed him".
And there it was. The truth.
"You....killed him?". My eyes began to fill.
"Why!?, why did you-!?".
"Alexis!?". My mother called.
I try to slip out of his grasp, but his grip on my shoulders was too strong.
"Miss Chandler?!, I heared a man call out.
From around the corner of the building two police men walked towards us.
"Miss Chandler are you ok?".
Michael quickly grabbed my hand with much force, and dragged me into the trees that stood behind the hospital.
The cops continued to run after us, and I could hear my mother calling out for me.
My blood rushed, I couldn't do anything.
I just ran, and ran until the men were out of sight. This is where the Bonnie and Clyde scenario had just began.
