TW: Suicide, death, hospitals, all that good shit

He smiled at him one last time before falling into a deep sleep. The sound of his heart monitor seemed to be the only think keeping him sane at the time. The room was silent without Vinny's constant rambling and Nolan's dry responses. Vinny didn't feel like talking to someone who couldn't hear him, and Nolan didn't have the strength to talk back very much. Taking Nolan's hand in two of his, he rubbed the back of it with both his thumbs, closing his eyes. It felt warm, and his hands were still soft.

It reminded Vinny of that day. Their first date. He was nervous about people seeing them- he'd always been shy. You know what they say: opposites attract. Nolan had held his hand the whole time. Sure, they got stares, but every time Vinny tried to pull his hand away, he would tighten his grip every so slightly, as if to say "It's alright. We'll walk past them, and we'll never see them again."

Now his hand was limp in his, and he took deep breaths as he tried to bring back good memories like that, the loud beeps directly beside him and the loud whirring of machines not helping his case. As he felt himself calm down slightly, the whirring began to sound like ocean waves. He was reminded of the swimming hole they went to when they were just friends in middle school. You could hear the laughter of families in the distance, but this swimming hole had enough sand to build a castle and enough water to swim in, the waves crashing into the rock and spraying them where they sat and ate. Vinny, of course, complained, but Nolan couldn't help but see the good in everything. That was one of the things he loved most about him.

He was shot back into reality, Nolan's strained expression making him realize how much pain he was in. How could he think so positively in a state like this? He had said he was fine but... could he be lying? He rested his head on Nolan's chest, listening to his heart beat lightly. He smiled as he remembered how cheesy he was with this kind of stuff. "Do you hear it beating?" he'd ask, "It only beats that fast for you."

Vinny told him how much he hated cheesy stuff like that, only because he knew he'd be bombarded with more cheesy pickup lines when he did. Though, Vinny's taken upon more of Nolan's energy while he was here. He refused to go silent. If opposites attract, he refused to be the same. He didn't want him to go away. The heart monitor picked up its pace.

Vinny's head shot up as he looked at the heart monitor, the lines shooting up and quickening in pace. He jumped up, pressing a button for the doctor to come and sticking his head out the door. "SOMEONE, PLEASE, ANYONE HELP!! SOMETHING'S WRONG!"

He ran back to his side, caressing the cheek on his expressionless face. Doctors rushed in quickly, calmly but efficiently ushering him out of the room. Vinny tried to push against them, screaming louder as he was repelled away from Nolan. Just before the door closed, he saw them pull out the defibrillator. He banged on the door and screamed before another doctor pulled him away from it. He was the only one there for Nolan, and now he was alone with a bunch of strangers.

The doctor moved his shoulders to face her. He could see her mouth moving, but all he could hear were the quickening beeps from the other side of the door. She took his hand, Vinny squeezing her hand tightly as his eyes darted around, trying to find a window or anything to take him away from where he was. His breathing quickened as the doctor tried desperately to calm him down and free her hand from his death grip when suddenly... a never-ending, high pitched beep resonated through the crack below the door. He dropped his hand to the side, stopped breathing after one sharp breath, and stared at the door, as though he could see through it. It was almost like he could.
