A bare wooden ceiling was all mikasa could see, as she laid facing upwards, with finely thin blankets draped over her in an attempt to insulate any remaining heat her body could give off. It was dim and disorientating how the little moonlight seeped through the cracks in the windows
and onto the ground, creating a lighter, azure shade on the wooden flooring. She faintly heard the gushing wind blowing outside as the snow wavered in its directions as if the wind had total control over it.She hid under the blankets in an unsuccessful attempt to keep warm on the blizzardous night she was trying to mentally and physically survive. Her thin, black eyes tired, but unable to help her get to sleep no matter how much she closed them nor for how long they were shut. She lightly sighed as she gently fluttered her eyes open and brought her bloodshot scarf up to her nose, sinking her face into the dirtied fabric. She ended up rolling over on her side, facing the wall and moving the blankets into an uncomfortable and uneven position. Looking behind over her shoulder, mikasa tried to fiddle with the blankets and make sure they covered her ice-cold body properly, until she heard a faint grunting sound from underneath her top bunk.
As she rolled back over, she propped her body upwards and leant over the edge, looking at the occupied bed underneath as her hair dangled below her. She blinked in a prolonged manner to try and adjust to the dark lighting that was emitted in the silent room and saw the figure of her roommate, Sasha, curled up in blankets attempting to insulate heat just as mikasa had tried. "Sasha." Mikasa spoke in a hushed tone as if there was someone else there. "What are you doing awake?" She accidentally spat, Vaguely disappointed in herself for coming off as more rude than curious, and the girl was so enticed by Sasha's state that she mentally beat herself up over it, despite it being a small mental mistake. "Oh sorry, did I wake you? The cold is making it hard to sleep." Sasha spoke in a slightly louder voice than the other girl. "No, I've been awake for a while now" mikasa said, nonchalantly hoping to get some sort of reply. Sasha let out a silent breath she held for a second, relived she didn't wake mikasa. "Oh that's good, uh.." she trailed off, not knowing what to say to the girl who was opposite her, hanging upside down. Mikasa let out a breath and got back into her bed and started to readjust under the blankets. That was until she heard faint creaks, and stopped in her tracks, with a perplexed face of what Sasha was up to.
She then saw the black silhouette of her roommate with a blanket slowly climbing up the slightly unsteady ladder that was worn down over time. Sasha then spoke up "can I sleep next to you..? It's too cold under there" she spoke with a frown that was barely visible as she pointed down to her newly unoccupied bottom bunk. Mikasa nodded her head lightly, making her head movements slightly more vigorous after a second, catching on to the idea that Sasha could only vaguely see her silhouette in the dark. Sasha lightly smiled and climbed in next to the other girl as mikasa shuffled backwards to the end of the bed, leaving a small gap between them as they faced away from each other. A few moments of insufferable silence went by.
"Hey, mika. What's your favourite food?" Sasha questioned, trying to break any faint strings of awkward silence that lingered. The randomness of the question and the new nickname caught mikasa off guard. "Mmm, not sure. Why?" Mikasa replied, not seeming phased by the nickname Sasha selected for her. "Well, I'm hungry and I can't sleep when I'm hungry." Sasha replied to Mikasa's question. Mikasa turned her head from the wall over her shoulder to the girl behind her, who faced away from her. She took a second to take in Sasha's features. her slim yet childish hands that were placed one above her head and the other close to her heart, which couldn't be seen from Mikasa's angle, soft auburn hair that shone a dark blue shade in the moonlight and how the shadow on her hair had a texture to it as the shadow of the faint snow glided past the window. After a few more silent seconds mikasa spoke up. "You have nice hands" she spoke softly. Sasha turned her head over to mikasa as she looked into Mikasa's dull eyes which small glint inside them. "You have nice eyes" Sasha replied while smiling. Mikasa's accidentally stern gaze softened, as she smiled into her scarf as she continued to look at the other girl. Mikasa let out a laughed huff, in which Sasha responded in-kind, letting out a breathy giggle. Mikasa stayed silent though, admiring her roommate with passionate eyes and a sympathetic expression. "Thanks.." Mikasa replied quietly.
