THE DAY WAS GLOOMY AND RAINY THE DAY HER MOTHER WENT MISSING. She was just twelve years old the night Jolie Cruz De Armani was pronounced missing. Earlier that day she had gone shopping with her mother, and her father had stayed at his office late due to some work.

Esmeralda remembers the last words her mother said to her. "Go to sleep, I'll be back," she said, and left in a hurry, leaving a scared girl with only the housemaid, Maria. She recalls how much her father cried and pleaded for his wife to return home.

There was an open investigation for a year before her father had given up and the police pronounced her dead. Esmeralda grew distant from her father, his constant yelling and screaming, making it known that it was all her fault her mother was dead.

Antonio Cruz had never laid a finger on his daughter up until the day before her fourteenth birthday. Esmeralda didn't show up to school for a week, the reason? She had a "severely contagious stomach bug." No one visited her or questioned her or her father.

Her father's actions didn't stop, during the day he would act sweet toward her and put on a show for the entire Kildare County. His facade has lasted him too long. Esmeralda was forced to put on a smile every day after she got with Rafe, her father's actions seemed to lessen as he formed formalities with Ward Cameron.

Now, Esmeralda is seventeen. She stares at her feet dipped into the water as she sits on the pool edge. She could feel the sweat drip down her body from the heat.

"Esme!" The deep voice broke off her thoughts, returning her to reality. She turned towards her house where her father stood, waving his arms around to get her attention. She tilted her back, letting a groan slip past her glossed-up lips. She stood up and grabbed the platform sandals that were placed next to her.

As she got closer to her father she was nervous for some odd reason. It may have to do with the look he had on his face. Serious expressions never had a good outcome in her case.

Once she had been adjacent to him she spoke, "Si, papá?" Yes, Dad? She gave him an innocent look, hoping he wouldn't get her in trouble or anything.
