chapter three —
dannys haircutwhile seungho viewed children playing in the small playground, which mostly consisted of three swings that were suspended from two big trees and a blue plastic slide with metal monkey bars, seungho struggled to keep his eyes open due to the intense sunlight. "aren't you gonna play?" seungho asked the boy seated next to him.
the youngster on the wooden seat next to him shook his head as he watched children fighting over the swing. his voice was hoarse and low, "hmm.. i think i'll wait," he said. seungho constantly looked at the boy and noticed how he constantly scanned the park, seemingly searching for someone. seungho nods as an elderly woman approaches the bench. the boy quickly moved to give the woman more room, and seungho did the same.
"why is your little girl dressed like a boy, aigoo?" stroking the boy's lengthy hair, the elderly woman enquired. the child remained silent and didn't appear to be concerned by her error of being mistaken for a girl— since, it was only because he wasn't paying attention; had he been, he might have snapped. seungho gave the boy a quick glance before turning to the grandmother, who was wearing a hat to prevent the sun from shining directly into her eyes. in an effort to avoid sounding ignorant, seungho shuffled in his seat before speaking. "he's a boy."
before the lady could answer or continue the conversation, the boy stood up and said, "mama!" seungho and the elderly woman witnessed as he hurried in the direction of you, who have been only a few feet away. seungho took a good look at you; despite the fact that you were just going to the park, you were still clothed for a party or special occasion, which was a distinguishing feature of you that he always valued. your light yellow dress complemented your modestly high brown shoes, your waves in your hair, and maybe most significantly, the sunglasses, which were the newest fashion. it makes sense that the boy could recognize you because, in contrast to the other mothers at the park, your style was really distinctive. you crouched and stretched out your arms for him to embrace you, and he reacted by wrapping his arms tightly around you as if you two had only recently met after being apart for years. lifting him up as you moved toward the bench to sit next to seungho and grinned warmly at your sons embrace.
seunghos heart melted at the sight of his son with his mother—it was breathtaking, and the boy's reception of him differently from his mother made a lot of sense; it was nothing to be envious of, in seungho's opinion. as you sat down next to seungho and helped the boy stand up again, your light yellow dress swayed in the direction of the gentle breeze. the boy kept grinning broadly at you and covered his eyes with his palm so that the sun wouldn't ruin the beauty of his mother's face. although they were a little large on the boy's face, the sunglasses you removed from your face and put on his helped block the sun. since your son seemed to be your entire priority, seungho and you didn't exchange words. you pat his back and wave him off, saying, "go play." he nods and then sprints over to the slide.
