"Then, Julian," the little red head boy lifted up his head from his little toy, paying his attention to the caretaker, "What about you?"
"What about me?" He chirped back, little amber eyes innocently stared at the kind lady.
"Are you a mommy boy, or a daddy boy?"
'Is he a mommy boy? Or a daddy boy?' Julian can't seem to understand that question well even when he repeated the same words over and over again. Mommy? Or daddy? He wasn't quite sure.
And his teacher seemed to have noticed, and softly told him to not mind the question if he ever felt bothered by it. But the thing is, a child's mind is a wonder, you see.
They are filled with dozens of young and active neutrons, even for a quiet child such as he is. It was wild inside his head, bright like the sun yet calm like the sea breeze. Clear like the cloud, yet crowded like the bushes. It is everything in the universe multiplied by hundreds, compared to those in their adulthood who can already come up with an answer to every question.
That unanswered question seemed to have been embedded into Julian's mind. As he sat in the front seat of the car next to his father, he quietly nibbled on his blue biting toy. Small body secured tight by the strap.
His older brother and sister were both in the back of the seat. Yin talked all excited about the new comic he just bought (with Xavier's money), and Melissa hyped him up, she pointed out every protagonist that seemed interesting as she tightly hugged her doll with her other hand. They were loud, but it was all a buzz to Julian.
Not taking his eyes off of the road, Xavier said, "Hey, don't read inside the car."
And the noises behind quieted down by a little, reduced to many whispers as if their father won't notice them this way. Xavier couldn't help the smile forming by the edge of his lips. Whatever these brats do, it would never fail to brighten his day.
"Dad?"
A tiny voice suddenly interrupted.
Julian looked at his father with the same curiosity.
"Yes? What is it, little raven?"
Julian scrunched his face as he tried to remember the exact words his caretaker had asked him in the kindergarten, "Ughh... Am I, a mommy boy? Or a daddy boy?"
Xavier softly gasped at the question, finding it adorable by how innocent it was. He then gently explained to Julian, "Well, it's up to you. Do you feel closer to mommy or daddy?"
Julian made a little 'oh' sound, little by little understanding the question, "So, if I'm close to you, does that mean I'm a 'Daddy boy'?"
Xavier nodded as he took a right turn, "Correct."
Julian made a subtle grumble, trying to process what his father had just said.
"But, Dad," The red orbs looked down at his feet, contemplating again at the question. 'Why must it be so complicated?' he thought.
"I have no 'Mommy'"
The little boy casually exclaimed, unaware of the weight it could've carried. But thankfully, Xavier didn't take it too seriously. He can't deny that it was in fact true. None of his children have a mother, or a 'Mommy'.
But that doesn't mean that they won't have another figure to look up to other than him. Not having a 'mommy' doesn't mean they don't have someone who would wake them up every morning with kisses, or patiently wait for them to come home from school with dinner being cooked on the stove, or sing them a little lullaby as they fall into dreamland. No. They have it all. In their home sweet home.
