Elena pulled a chair up to Matt’s bed and sat down. After about fifteen minutes, the tears had finally stopped. ‘He wouldn’t want me crying over him anyway’ she thought to herself. She took his hand in hers and her heart skipped a beat. “His hand…It’s cold.” She said.
“Oh Matt, please wake up.” She said to the unconscious boy. He showed no response. “You know, this is the perfect chance for us to finally talk. I know that you won’t be able to talk back but…maybe that’s a good thing! If you could, you would probably yell at me again. Yelling seems to be the only thing we can do to each other now and days. It sucks, but it’s my entire fault.
“I’m…” she started laughing. “I don’t usually say this but I’m sorry. I’ve been a little bit of a bitch to you. Ok a lot a bit. And I know that I was just trying to get you to talk to me but I went about it the wrong way. I understand that now and I feel horrible about it. Your probably wondering why I turned over a new leaf about this but…when I saw you get bitten and you hit the floor, something in me just clicked.
“If you were awake, you would probably be saying “but you did say sorry! You said it that day in the caf’” or “you have nothing to feel sorry about it was all me.” But the truth is, when I said it that time, I…didn’t actually mean it. You see, I don’t like to say I’m sorry. I’m, I guess you can say, selfish. But I really and truly mean it now. Your one of my best friends and I can’t bare to lose you. So please don’t…don’t hate me when you wake up. I…guess that’s all I have to say. I’ll see you later.” She said. She stood up from her chair, kissed Matt on his forehead, and walked out of the room. But she failed to see his hand twitch ever so slightly the moment her lips touched him. “How is does he look?” Meredith said to Elena as she walked up to the group.
“He looks okay. He’s really pale and cold but I’m guessing that’s because he’s is, for intents and purposes, dead. But other than that, I didn’t see anything visibly wrong.” She said. Before anyone could say a word, the doctor walked up to them.
“Visiting hours are over, but I’ve pulled some strings for you. You can stay the night here in the waiting area or you can go home and come back later. It’s up to you.”
“Doctor! Doctor come quick! It’s the Donovan boy! He’s waking up.” A nurse yelled. The Doctor ran to the room with the group following right behind him. When they got to the room, they saw their friend sitting up in the bed rubbing his eyes.
“Matt!” they all yelled. He looked at them slightly stunned that they were all there before he doubled over in pain. The nurses softly pushed him to lie on the bed to ease the pain. After a couple of minutes, the pain subsided.
“Matthew. Hi my name is Dr. Vincent Carter.” Matt tried to sit up but was stopped by a hand on his shoulder. “You don’t want to sit up. It’ll just cause you more pain.
“What’s going on?” Matt said. His voice came out gravely and rough. As if he hadn’t used it in a while.
“Would you like the long story or the short story?”
“The long story would be nice. And could I get some water?” he asked. Within seconds, Bonnie was helping him drink water.
“For the long story, I’ll let your friends tell you.”
“Well,” Damon said. “Before I can give you the whole story, you need to hear a few things.”
