Pre-Hogwarts

"Lyra, time for dinner!" My mother called, interrupting my thoughts as I sat in my tree. I was practicing my magic, something that my best friends Hannah Abbott and Susan Bones had explained to me. They found me on the playground in 5th grade grinning and laughing as I moved droplets of water from the rain to form figurines and froze them. After I froze the fox ice sculptures, I used gusts of wind to move them.

They explained that they were from wizarding families, but their parents sent them to a muggle school to learn basic life and social skills. They said that I have remarkable control over my magic and showed me what they could do. Hannah could create flames and make them dance around, and Susan could use the wind to randomly hit us in the face. We were inseparable from that point on.

I thought of the day we pranked my former best friends that had left me for a popular girl named Claire. We dyed their hair bright neon colors. I couldn't help but grin at the memory.

I walked to my house and washed up for dinner. We were having steak and mushrooms, one of my favorites! "Hi Mum, Dad,"

"Hi Lyra, did you have a nice walk?" my mother inquired.

"Yup!" I grinned "I found some raspberry bushes and snacked on those"

Pretty soon we had finished eating, and we all went to the living room to watch The Office. We had a weekend routine, first we had breakfast, then I did homework and read while they painted (they are artists), we had lunch, we go out to go shopping or hang out around the house, I went on a walk to practice my magic (not that they know that), we have dinner, we watch some tv, then we go to bed.

I set it to one of my favorite episodes, The Convict, and we all relaxed on the couches. I was a very mature 10 year old, and was probably more like 14 mentally. My birthday was in a few days anyways. Then I finally will get my Hogwarts letter!

Once we finished watching The Office we all headed to our rooms.

As I layed I thought more. Shocking I know. The trick to life is learning how to get what you want. For example, my teachers always liked me if I was polite, intellectual, and mature. My parents liked me to be a kid, easily showing emotions, brightness, and always bubbly. My peers liked it if I was like them, whether that be kind, into gossip, smart, stupid, or any other trait they most commonly showed. I was an extraordinarily good liar, and adept at hiding my true emotions. The only people I trusted enough to be myself around are Susan and Hannah, each being unfalteringly kind.

I just cannot wait to learn more magic and read books on the subject.
