Walking through the aisles to get some groceries, I spotted Baylen a few aisles down. He was studying a box of cereal, which he held upside down. I rolled my eyes, the idiot wasn't as subtle in his spying as he thought he was. I continued grocery shopping and ignored the not so subtle glances.
Once I paid and headed outside, I saw the younger female loitering around. He brought company, it seemed.
I was getting in my car, when she decided to speak up. "You know. You're good. You almost had me fooled."
I looked over my shoulder and raised a brow at her.
"Your accent — it's quite heavy. You nearly got me. You sound like a native, but you learned the language as a child from a native, didn't you? Your mom, right. You hid that fact very well. Everyone thought you didn't speak a single word. Your family hasn't lived here in decades. Yet, here you are — sounding like a native."
It was true, I'd learned the tongue from my mother. They were good. As far as I know only my parents knew I grew up bilingual. I'd have to be more careful. "What are you trying to say?"
The past years had certainly helped making me sound like a native even more.
"I think you know. You're basically admitting that you're him."
I turned around fully. "I'm not admitting anything," I pressed my lips together. "I'm merely asking what you're trying to gain here."
"You know, we're looking for you. So i'm trying to get you to admit you're him."
"How many times do I have to tell you I'm not him," I growled annoyed. "So what're you gonna do now that you found out I'm not who you're looking for."
"But you are."
I wanted to scream. They just couldn't let it go, could they. But I didn't let any of it show. "Just humour me."
"Fine. I guess we'll continue to look for him."
"What do you even want from him. Why do all this?" I gestured around us. I was curious about the answer to be honest. Why would they search for a legally dead guy.
"I can't tell you."
I was about to call her a hypocrite, when she continued, "Not here at least."
There she went again with the edgy words. "Then where would you propose?"
"At your place," she smiled.
Of course she'd say that. I sighed deeply and dragged a hand down my face. "Fine, get in. We'll talk back at the house. You wanna bring Baylen too?"
"What. Why? What are you talking about. He isn't here—" she rambled.
"—Oh cut the crap would you. You bunch aren't as subtle as you think you are."
"But he's no—"
I gave her a look.
"Fine. I'll get him," she threw over her shoulder as she walked away.
I got in the car and waited for them to join me. I could just drive away, but they'd definitely just pull up on my front door anyways. So I'd be useless. The annoying pests. I drummed with my fingers on the steering wheel, sighing deeply. I looked at my watch, it hadn't been more than a minute. Where were they.
Then they finally came in sight and got in. I turned the key, starting the car and drove away.
"So, thanks for this," the girl mumbled after some time. It seems she was uncomfortable with the silence.
I just hummed in response, not bothered by the silence in any way. Couldn't care less if they'd be uncomfortable. Let them.
Arriving at my place shortly, I got out of the car and walked up to my front door without waiting for them to catch up.
They might have been silent on the drive here, but their eyes were hungrily searching for clues. Oh so hungry for any clue or hint that could prove I was him.
I was actually him, but they wouldn't find anything that could prove it. And I was happy as long as they didn't find any.
Leaving the front door open in a silent invite, I waited in the door frame until I heard both car doors close. I locked the car by clicking the car key and continued my way to the kitchen.
