Maya Clark woke up with a knot in her stomach, a gnawing sense that something was wrong, though she couldn't pinpoint why. After getting ready, she grabbed her things, making sure to pack a few extra snacks in her bag, a habit she had picked up during her pregnancy. As she headed out the door, she was stopped by a call from her boyfriend, Wes.
"Hey, Wes, I was just leaving," Maya said, closing the door behind her and adjusting the strap of her bag over her growing belly.
"Maya," Wes's voice was heavy, laced with worry. "Tara was attacked."
Maya's heart sank. "What do you mean? By who?" Her voice was frantic.
"She's alive, don't worry. But she said it was someone in a Ghostface mask."
Maya froze, her body tensing. "Maya? Are you there?" Wes's voice pulled her back to reality.
"Yeah... I'll see you at school," she managed, ending the call. Her walk to school felt like a blur, her mind racing with thoughts of Tara. She absentmindedly rested a hand on her belly, a comforting gesture she had relied on ever since she found out she was pregnant. It wasn't something she had expected, and certainly not with everything that had happened before she and Wes got together.
At school, Maya's thoughts were consumed by what had happened. The image of Tara, attacked by someone dressed as Ghostface, kept playing in her mind. When Wes found her in the hallway, he immediately noticed the tension in her posture. He wrapped an arm around her, his hand resting protectively over the small of her back.
"Hey, are you okay?" he asked gently, his eyes scanning her face for any sign of distress.
"Yeah, I'm just thinking about Tara," Maya replied, her voice tinged with sadness as they walked together.
Wes stopped her, turning her to face him. "Look, she's going to be okay," he said, his eyes full of reassurance, but his gaze briefly flicked to her belly, a silent reminder of why he was so concerned. Even though the baby wasn't his, he'd always been by her side, supporting her through everything.
"Okay," Maya nodded, though the worry in her heart remained as they continued to class.
The rest of the day passed in a haze. Maya couldn't focus on anything other than Tara's attack. Sitting outside at the picnic tables with her friends, she absentmindedly rubbed her belly, a comforting gesture that had become second nature. She barely registered the principal's announcement over the intercom about school being canceled tomorrow.
"That was Sam," Wes said, putting his phone away and then glancing at Maya, a hint of concern in his eyes.
"She's coming?" Amber asked, sitting beside Maya.
"Yeah," Wes nodded, his hand resting briefly on Maya's shoulder.
"Great. Watch everything get worse," Amber muttered, shaking her head.
