3RD PERSON POV. THE PINK PALACE APARTMENTS, ASHLAND, OREGON, USA

━━━━━━♡♤♡━━━━━━

THE WEEKS HAD DWINDLED BY PAINFULLY SLOWLY. (Name) sat, perched like a caged bird, on the window seat in her and Eric's bedroom, gazing out at the outside world. It was cloudy today. The sky was enveloped by a myriad of dull, monochromatic clouds, blocking the sun's gentle touch from the sparse land that surrounded the Pink Palace Apartments. Leela sat loyally by her owner, adorning her usual bright red collar, whilst the newly adopted cat sat on his owner's other side.

Each animal got an occasional pet or a scratch behind the ear. Six months after the defeat of The Incubus, (Name) felt void of emotions. After defeating a malevolent creature, (Name) had expected to feel victorious and free. Happy. At the maximum, (Name) felt a sore loss. Like everything wasn't as it seemed. She let out a long exhale, as the sun blossomed from behind the thick, grey clouds that floated like fish in a pond.

It was the genesis of May, specifically the 1st of May. April had silently come and gone in that time. Like a thief in the night. The young woman felt that something wasn't right. Her eyes glanced over at the drawer attached to her bedside table. (Name) slowly stood up, earning her a strange look from the dog and cat. She slowly ventured over to the drawer, feet treading softly against the wooden floor, which creaked softly as she did so.

Her shaking hand reached for the round knob that was the drawer's handle. She screwed her eyes shut and quickly opened the drawer. Her eyes fluttered open, only to widen with shock. The hair on the back of her neck stood up. Her mouth became agape. Fear and terror crept down her spine and rested wickedly in the pit of her stomach. The key was gone. The drawer was empty.

Desperately, (Name) raced out of the bedroom and down the stairs. The house was strangely quiet. Eerily quiet. Chills raced down (Name)'s spine as laboured breaths shallowly escaped her lips. She'd heard Eric's loud voice over the phone downstairs a second ago...what'd changed? "Eric?!" she yelled desperately, "Eric?! Goddamn it! Eric!?".

Silence. Complete and utter silence. The silence was so thick that you cut it up and serve it as a slice of cake. It was harrowing. Solace wreaked in the air, looming menacingly. It almost taunted (Name), laughing at her desperate attempts to locate her soon-to-be husband. Then her glance titled over to the living room door. It was ajar.

She silently edged her way over to the ajar door. Her heart drummed loudly in her chest, she thought she'd faint. Her fingernails dug ruthlessly into the skin of her palms, creating crescent-shaped indents on her palms. Her eyes were wide, pupils grew gigantic, ablaze and alive with the sense of pure fear. Something she'd not felt in so long.

A shaky, sharp breath escaped her breath. She felt the warm air fanning against her lips as it escaped her nostrils. Her hand pushed the living room door open, revealing the sight that made her stomach churn with terror. The little door, visually harmless, in the corner wall was unlocked. The key sat in the keyhole, the onyx colour with its black button on the end taunting her, mocking her victory.
