A/N Happy St. Patrick's day. Sláinte!
Dutch was blabbering inspirational words into Cain's ear the whole way.
You're a long way from your home country, but home or
Together, we will find hope
Whatever bull you could make up on the spot.It sort of creeped him out how blindly Arthur agreed with every statement, every so often trying to butt a debate in and failing.
They reached a slope, and Aolios let out a grumpy snort. He didn't want to take horse riding lessons from Javier anymore. His pride -as small and shrivelled as it currently was - would not be swallowed for an intolerable asshole such as him.
"Up ahead!" Dutch called. His voice kept cracking subtly. He must strain it a lot.
"Micah." Arthur said without warmth.
"Arthur, Dutch, you found shelter, and you brought the prostitute." Again, neither exchanged any relief or warmth in their voices to be reassured that neither had been shot down by "O'Driscolls" or whatever was after them.Dutch didn't notice the silent murder that was being exchanged through Arthur and Micah's glares. He hoped Arthur was taking offence for the insult thrown at Cain for him because frankly, he neither cared nor had enough energy to fight with a mental geezer such as Micah. He must've gone ahead of them whilst they were out saving John.
"You found something to be heading back to report, I'm guessing Micah?" Dutch's horse took a step forward to make space between Micah and Arthur, like it too hated their meaningless bickering.
"Yeah, a little homestead down thataway." He gestured to behind him with his lamp.
"Anyone home?" Dutch's voice beginning to grow fainter in Cain's ear. He shook his head, tightened his grasp on the reins, and he felt his mind return to his body.
"- Blazing with light and noise. Sounded like a party."
Dutch nodded. "Well, lead the way."
"Gladly."Minutes later, Micah just couldn't help himself.
"Why'd you bring him?"
Arthur made a sound halfway between a sigh and a grumble.
"Brought who, Micah?"
"The makeup guy." Cain rolled his eyes
He was glad the blizzard disguised his face. He had grown insecure and wiped it off after leaving Javier and the stall."Let's just get to this homestead, Micah. You can whine about me all you want when we get back." He regretted his impulsively aggressive words the second the words left his mouth. He'd put his Dad voice on and everything. Shit.
"Listen, Gadabout. I outrank you here. I'll have you shot, castrated and hung on a lamppost if you're not careful,"
"Now, now Micah, strangers are just folk you have yet to aquant-"
Micah didn't seem to notice Dutch's drop of logic."You talk to me like I'm some misfit kid again, I'll shiv you and dump your body in a lake, ya hear?"
They saw the house up ahead, and Cain shrugged.
"Good luck."
Dutch held up a hand, stern enough to indicate there'd be hell if Micah replied to that."I'll go ahead, see if I can tug some strings in these peoples hearts. Hopefully, they'll offer us something. I'll give you a signal if I think things are going south. Cain," He nodded to the gun holsters partly hidden by Cain's shirt. He'd given up concealing it.
"You better know how to use that. You three better hide yourselves. A lonely man is a lot less intimidating than four nasty looked degenerates. Micah, get to that wagon, Cain, Arthur, cattle shed."
He nodded as Dutch patted him firmly on the shoulder, leaving them. His mouth lined, and he grunted as the pain shot up through his spine and slowly faded away.
"You didn't tell him I got bit?"
Arthur shrugged one of his shoulders as he dismounted his horse and hitched it up.
"If I did, he wouldn't let you come. You're a tough one, Cain, but also incredibly stupid and try-hardy."
He joined Arthur, and they came to a cattle shed and ducked down."You sure you can handle this? You seemed spooked by those wolves back in the mountains."
"Well, these aren't wolves."
"Yeah, they're people. With guns." They heard Dutch talking to someone and hushed their voices.
"Which is debatably better."
Arthur frowned and turned to him.
"How so?"
"Imagine wolves with guns."
"You've gone -"
"Arthur." Micah hissed. They both turned their heads to him.
