'How dare he calls her a snob and at the same time decide again what exactly she needed.' Mary started to pace around the small office. In her anger, she started talking to herself:
"I couldn't stand to lose another man in a car accident. I can't do that again." She sobbed very loudly and covered her mouth in shock.
However, her anger wasn't gone yet.
"Why does everyone always think they know what I want? To know what I need?" Mary decided that this wasn't going to get her anywhere right now. She sat down at her desk and began to sort through the pig farm documents. Her thoughts, however, stayed with Henry. What Mary didn't notice, was that Tom was standing in the hallway and heard her outburst, which was so uncharacteristic for her and above all, emotional. He didn't understand it, he didn't understand HER. The looks she secretly gave Henry, spoke their own languages, he thought. 'But no, the fine lady couldn't get involved with a simple racing driver.' Hearing that Mary was going back to her duties as administrator, he went back to Downton.

Edith threw angry all her clothes into her suitcase. 'How dare Mary? Once, just once in my life, I could have been happy! But no, Madam doesn't begrudge me anything or anyone. If only I had told Berti everything last night.', Edith fell on her bed sobbing and crying. When Tom knocked on her door, he knew exactly what to expect. "You are going back to London?", he asked with a sad undertone.
"Yeah, I can't bear to even look at her. SHE destroyed everything! One day I might have been happy. Don't I deserve this?" Edith yelled at him in complete disarray. Tom ran his hand over his face in desperation. 'This is going to be difficult.'
"Edith," he said quietly, walking over to put his hand gently on her shoulder, "I was over at Mary's office. This time I told her very clearly what I think about her and her behavior."
"Oh Tom," Edith sighed now, "it's no use if you two fight now, too. It's my own fault. I have had several chances to tell Berti the truth and never did. Mary is and will always be my big sister, egotistical and, above all, destroying everything that is good for me."
Edith began to pack her suitcase again, this time a little more tidily and calmly.
"I can't explain to you why Mary is acting like this. But someone had to tell her that she's acting like a jealousy little brat," said Tom, while he watched Edith quite helplessly as she packed. Edith snorted really unladylike and looked at him.
"And that someone is you, Tom?" she asked, raising her eyebrows.
Tom smiled the same sad smile he had often on his lips since Sybills death.
"Yes, apparently it must be me. Nobody else is honest enough with her and I don't think anyone else she would even listen to."
This time Edith had to laugh through her tears. "You know I'm always honest with her. But I'm just the little, stupid Edith...." The next dress ended up in her suitcase angrily. "Tom, will you manage that the chauffeur drives me to the train station, please?" she asked Tom now. He realized that Edith would not speak to him any further and resignedly went to the servants.

'I can't, don't want to and won't let this sit on me' was Marys last thought before she stormed into Ediths now emptied room. "Are you going back to London?", asked Mary now.
"Yes, Mary, I'm going back to London. I don't want to and can't stay around you after this morning." Edith snapped at Mary. Mary took a deep breath and tried to explain to Edith, "Edith, I didn't even know you didn't tell Berti."
"Mary, NO, you knew what you were doing and you didn't care if you were destroying my future . YOU couldn't stand me being happy, while you keep making yourself unhappy. And the worst part of it, is that you're stupid. Henry loves you and judging by the looks you're giving him, you love him too." Edith interrupted her and closed her suitcase.
While leaving she only said: "I hope for you that you know what you are doing and that you can happy for and with me at some point without destroying it again."
Back downstairs in the hall, Edith had another conversation with Berti. He explained to her in brief words that his problem was not Marygold, but Edith's lack of trust. A marriage can only exist if the partners trust each other. The two then parted and went their separate ways. Berti to his cousins funeral and Edith to London to her newspaper.
